Joondalup Kid Award
Jasmine, Year 4
Jasmine is a thoughtful, considerate and sincere student who always assists teachers and her class mates throughout the day. She is a fantastic buddy to her friends in Education Support. Congratulations Jasmine, you are a fantastic role model and a wonderful Joondalup Student.
Pop Art in Years 3 & 4
Students in years 3 & 4 learnt about pop art. They viewed the artwork of Keith Haring and then created work in the same style. The people are singing, playing or moving to music. Bright coloured acrylic paint was used and then pant markers to create the strong black lines.
Pop Art in Years 4 & 5
Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Students in years 4 & 5 had fun creating an onomatopoeia using paint, felt pens, and bright coloured card.
Pop Art in Years 2 & 3
Students in years 2 & 3 created these great acrylic paintings after viewing the artwork of pop artist Romero Britto.
3D Artwork
Following on from the 2D artwork of monsters and sharks the students in Pre-Primary and Year 1, worked with form and create them in 3D.
Maths Award
Cody, Year 2
Cody immerses himself in Mathematical activities making the most of every learning activity. He displays exceptional problem solving skills in Mathematics. Cody demonstrates and describes processes using all four operations. He completes all tasks with diligence and enthusiasm.
Year 1 Mathematicians
The Year Ones from Rooms 14, 15 and 30 have been busy working on new concepts in Maths. These include expanded notation in Number and days of the week, months of the year and time in Measurement.
The children have made clocks and used them to practise making o’clock and half past times. They have especially enjoyed consolidating their understanding of time by playing partner, group and class games.
The Year One children have been using music and movement to help learn the days of the week, months of the year and the seasons. They have completed tasks that require the seasons to be matched to the months that they occur and have been using the language of tomorrow and yesterday when learning the order of days of the week.
Expanded notation builds upon the children’s knowledge of place value. Given a number, the children use tens and ones to show the expanded way of writing that number in a number sentence. For example; 76 = 70 + 6 or 70 + 6 = 76
The children have been practising this partitioning of numbers using games and materials for hands on fun!
We are mad about maths in Year One!
Joke of the Week
Q:What time of year do Mathematicians love?
A: Chris….maths!
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope you all had a restful school holidays. My family and I spent a lot of time outside in the beautiful weather exploring parks, surfing at the beach and spending time just hanging out in the back yard. This made me think about how important it is to be in nature, not just for myself, but for my kids too. We all noticed how calm we were, how much the kids got along with each other and how restful we all slept after spending time in nature.
Sometimes we get resistance from the kids about wanting to go and explore, there is some pretty exciting technology that keeps the kids away from it, so I found a blog that I really love and it has inspired me to get out there and explore. Here is one of my favourite articles from Nurture and Thrive - “5 Tips to get Your Child to Love Nature Activities”
“Spending time in nature boosts self-esteem, mood, and relaxes your cognitive intensity. Perhaps all of this de-stressing leads one to be kind and generous. When exposed to more beautiful pictures of landscapes or beautiful indoor plants, participants were more trusting, generous and helpful. One study showed that spending even 5-minutes outside will improve mood. That’s why when cabin fever sets in, fighting siblings, or even a fussy baby, my instant fix is to go outside.”
Quote take from Ashely from Nurture and Thrive

So have a think about the area you live in. Is there somewhere you could explore? Take a walk on the beach? Go for a hike?

Welcome back for Term 4. This is the term we harvest our Spring vegetables and get our garden ready for the Summer months.
The after School Garden Club will be on in Week 2, 4, 5, 6 and finish in Week 8. There will be no club in weeks 3 & 7 due to whole school staff meetings. Numbers are limited to 20, so fill the form out below and return to your teacher or the office. Spare forms are available at the office.
This term will see another worm farm come into action as we endeavour to recycle most of our organic food scraps and move further along in our sustainability journey. If you have an interest in worm farming, Kevin from the Worm Shed will run an incursion during week 2 Garden Club 3-4pm. Come along if you are interested in learning about worms. No booking is necessary. Bring a 2l plastic bottle with the top part cut off as you will be making a mini worm farm to take home.
Our Garden Club came 3rd in the Perth Royal Show, so congratulations to everyone involved in growing, nurturing and making our displays.
During the last week of Term 3 the Garden and Moorditj club members made their own pizzas and celebrate a fabulous term of ‘teamwork’. A fabulous time was had by all.
Woolworths has kindly donated a display box and raised garden bed for collection of these seed packs. The schools would appreciate any donations. Drop them down near the collection box outside the office.
Once the seedlings are mature enough, they will be planted just inside the front school gates so you can observe the progress of the plants. Classes will have the opportunity to care and record their observations of growth. A big thank you to Jay for looking after these seedlings during the holidays.
Recycling Programs – Near the front office
Please continue to bring in:

What can I put on the carts?
- Homegrown or homemade produce: fruit, veg, herbs, preserves, eggs, etc
- Preferably grown with organic principles, without toxins. Grown with love is a strict prerequisite!
- Seeds, seedlings, cuttings and rootstock (Please label all, and heirloom seeds are best, as they can be saved from)
