Year 1 Mathematicians

The Year Ones from Rooms 14, 15 and 30 have been busy working on new concepts in Maths. These include expanded notation in Number and days of the week, months of the year and time in Measurement.

The children have made clocks and used them to practise making o’clock and half past times. They have especially enjoyed consolidating their understanding of time by playing partner, group and class games.

The Year One children have been using music and movement to help learn the days of the week, months of the year and the seasons. They have completed tasks that require the seasons to be matched to the months that they occur and have been using the language of tomorrow and yesterday when learning the order of days of the week.

Expanded notation builds upon the children’s knowledge of place value. Given a number, the children use tens and ones to show the expanded way of writing that number in a number sentence. For example; 76 = 70 + 6  or  70 + 6 = 76
The children have been practising this partitioning of numbers using games and materials for hands on fun!

We are mad about maths in Year One!
