Sustainability Corner
Welcome back for Term 4. This is the term we harvest our Spring vegetables and get our garden ready for the Summer months.
The after School Garden Club will be on in Week 2, 4, 5, 6 and finish in Week 8. There will be no club in weeks 3 & 7 due to whole school staff meetings. Numbers are limited to 20, so fill the form out below and return to your teacher or the office. Spare forms are available at the office.
This term will see another worm farm come into action as we endeavour to recycle most of our organic food scraps and move further along in our sustainability journey. If you have an interest in worm farming, Kevin from the Worm Shed will run an incursion during week 2 Garden Club 3-4pm. Come along if you are interested in learning about worms. No booking is necessary. Bring a 2l plastic bottle with the top part cut off as you will be making a mini worm farm to take home.
Our Garden Club came 3rd in the Perth Royal Show, so congratulations to everyone involved in growing, nurturing and making our displays.
During the last week of Term 3 the Garden and Moorditj club members made their own pizzas and celebrate a fabulous term of ‘teamwork’. A fabulous time was had by all.
Woolworths has kindly donated a display box and raised garden bed for collection of these seed packs. The schools would appreciate any donations. Drop them down near the collection box outside the office.
Once the seedlings are mature enough, they will be planted just inside the front school gates so you can observe the progress of the plants. Classes will have the opportunity to care and record their observations of growth. A big thank you to Jay for looking after these seedlings during the holidays.
Recycling Programs – Near the front office
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Mobile phones and accessories
- Dental hygiene packaging including toothbrushes
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY)
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- NOTE: WE NO LONGER COLLECT BEAUTY CONTAINER OR PRODUCTS AS THIS WASTE STREAM HAS CEASED.
Remember that our Grow Free Cart is set up near the office.
"How does the cart work?" We have a simple answer: you give what you can, and take what you need. There are no prices, no bartering, no trading, no value. Like you would to family and loved ones.
What can I put on the carts?
- Homegrown or homemade produce: fruit, veg, herbs, preserves, eggs, etc
- Preferably grown with organic principles, without toxins. Grown with love is a strict prerequisite!
- Seeds, seedlings, cuttings and rootstock (Please label all, and heirloom seeds are best, as they can be saved from)
- All things gardening, whether it be gardening magazines, planters, worm tea, etc.
- Jars, paper bags and small boxes for seeds or produce.
Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Stacey – Sustainability Coordinators
