Term One Celebrations
The term has flown by and once again, it has been very busy for students and teachers. Some of the activities were the GRIP Leadership Conference for the Student Councillors and Faction Captains, Faction and Interschool Carnivals, Harmony Day, Ride to School, Lantern Parade, Joondalup Learning Community Conference, Open Night, Science Enrichment Program, PIVOT Surveys on teacher effectiveness, On-Entry Assessment for all Pre-primary students and the ANZAC Commemorative Ceremony. I would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and dedication to ensuring these events happened seamlessly, without their assistance, these events wouldn’t occur.

The School Board met for the second time this term. Below is an abridged version of our last agenda. The Board meets twice per term to discuss the governance of the school.
- School Board Code of Conduct
- School Finances and Funding Agreement
- School Board Training
- 2018 Annual Report
- Workforce Management Plan
I would like to thank Kerry Hollywood, Councillor at the City of Joondalup for her time on our School Board. Kerry has retired from her position on our Board as she feels it’s time for some new knowledge and expertise. Kerry’s insight and knowledge will be missed and on behalf of everyone not just members of the School Board but students, staff and parents, thank you, we wish you all the best for your future endeavours.
Staffing Update
As you are all aware Mr Hahn retired at the end of Week 3, Term 1. The position will be officially advertised sometime in Term 2 and then interviews will be conducted after shortlisting has taken place. It is likely that I will remain in this position for the majority of Term 2 until the process has been finalised. Mr Bibby will return to his teaching position for Term 2 and Mrs Young will join the executive team as the Associate Principal. Mrs. Cobbledick will replace Mrs Young in the classroom. A comprehensive handover will take place to ensure continuity of learning programs and student needs are catered for. Thank you to Mrs East for taking over Mr Bibby’s position, you have taken all of the challenges in your stride. A big thank you to Mr Bibby for joining our Executive Team this term. Your knowledge and expertise will be missed as well as your awesome sense of humour.
GRIP Conference Feedback
On Wednesday 27th March our students, who hold a Leadership role, attended the GRIP Conference which involved the training of our students as leaders. I wanted to share an email that I received from John, Principal of Inner City College regarding our Campus Leadership Team.
“Just to let you know that I caught the train in this morning, and shared a carriage with the Joondalup PS student leadership team. Both kids and staff were a credit to your school. The kids were excited, polite and courteous to all members of the community. For a Principal with no students, it made a lovely change and a great way to start the day! Congratulations to all involved.”
Thank you
Thank you to all parents and community members who assisted and supported our school programs such as OSCAR, OSCAM, carnivals, canteen roster and school banking. I would like to also acknowledge our dynamic Parents and Citizens team for all of their fund raising events they have coordinated this term. All of you have made a positive impact for your child’s school, congratulations and well done. I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 29th April.
Lantern Parade
On Saturday students, families and staff formed part of the annual City of Joondalup Lantern Parade Festival. The theme this year was Earth, Moon and Stars. Joondalup Primary Schools was represented by a number of students dressed in traditional Indonesian costume. These students played the angklungs, to the tune of “I Still Call Australia Home”, while also carrying models of the planets in our solar system. A huge thank you to Ibu, Mrs Phillips and campus staff for leading the organisation of the parade. A huge thank you to all the parents, staff and students who gave up time after school and on weekends to create costumes, lanterns and props for the festival.
I hope you have a fantastic holiday.
These students have produced some amazing work and we would love to share it with you.
Room 14 Writing
I was very fortunate to get a personal invitation from the students of Room 14 to look at their fantastic Writing. As you can see, they have all done an amazing job. The writing was the end product of a lot of work completed throughout the term, going through the steps of Talk for Writing.
A big Congratulations to our Merit Award Winners from the Assembly held on Friday 29th March.

Science Enrichment Program
A Space Dream
Joondalup Primary School offers a science program that aims to inspire young people to be science leaders.
The program is designed to cultivate and pass on a sense of wonderment and scientific curiosity by engaging students in a variety of hands-on investigations that explore all the fields of science as taught in the Australian Curriculum.
Nine students were selected by their classroom teachers to participate in a six-week Science Enrichment Program after school. The selected students embarked on a scientific journey through the solar system, exploring the 8 planets and the dwarf planets that revolve around the Sun. With a STEM focus in mind, each student was asked to design and build a planet so that it was aesthetically correct and would be illuminated at night to show the inner core structure. To further enhance and extend the Science Enrichment Program focus, students participated in the Joondalup Twilight Lantern Festival. The showcase of the JPS planets was an astronomical standout in the festival as they fitted in perfectly with the festival theme ‘A Space Dream’.
Congratulations to the following Year Six students who have successfully completed the program in Term One; Jude, Jaxson, Elizabeth, Adeena, Tia, Lex, Flynn, Rachael, Annabella.
Biology
Term 1 2019
Biology is the study of living things. Biologists try and understand the natural world and the things that live in it. These include subjects such as plants, animals and micro-organisms.
Throughout Term One, the students have been proactive in the fields of biochemistry (the study of the material substances that make up living things), Botany (the study of plants) and Zoology (the study of animals). The aim of lessons in the lab have been to engage students in inquiry based experiments where they take on the role of a Biologist. Lessons have included living and non-living classification, anatomical study of fruit and vegetables, seed dissections and the exploration of yeast as a micro-organism used in making bread. Many of the students have also taken on a parenting role as they have raised a sunflower from seed or a meal worm from egg in order to understand the life cycle of a plant and animal.
It has been a rewarding term with JPS raising many keen Biologists for the future.

Joondalup Schools improve in sport. The Joondalup Schools recently competed in the Interschool athletics carnival with great success. The students combined to compete against Currambine Primary School, Springfield Primary School and Edgewater Primary School.
The 1st of April saw the students compete in the long jump and long throws. Joondalup had a positive day, finishing joint second in the long jump and winning the long throws. This put Joondalup in second place overall, an improvement over 2018’s results where Joondalup sat in third place after the long jumps and long throws.
This is a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of the students towards progressing their athletic abilities during sport, inside and outside of school time. Additionally, it exhibits the level of dedication the parents of the school have, giving their own time to coach or support their children in their physical development.
April 4th was the day of the Interschool sprints and team games. The students were encouraged to have fun, try their best and support each other throughout the day. This aided Joondalup to finish second overall.
Congratulations to all the students at the Joondalup Schools who participated and made the day a great success. Your behavior was a positive reflection on our schools. Thank you to the students who did not make the team and provided excellent support by pushing the limits of the competing students in training and selection.
Thank you to all the parents who stayed and supported the students in their events. The students found it very encouraging to see familiar faces supporting them, while they represented the school. Thank you to the teachers who brought students over to support the competitors on the day. Thank you to Miss Mercer, Mrs Young, Miss Goodridge, the Administration Staff Faction Captains and student and parent volunteers. Through your support, the day was well organised and a positive experience for Joondalup.
Thank you to Bec and Mrs Egan. Your support through running club and organising behind the scenes was a massive help and greatly appreciated by the parents, staff and the students.

From our free dress day on Tuesday 9th April we raised $407.25 and an additional $198.65 from our Faction Carnival face painting and hair colouring for Srang Primary School. That’s a total of $605.90. Well done everyone!
On Saturday, the 6th April selected Joondalup Primary School students from years 2, 4, 5 and 6 took part in the 2019 Joondalup Festival Lantern Parade. Mrs Phillips’ students carried planet lanterns that were made during the Science program. They wore Balinese hats called “udeng” and North Sumatran sashay scarfs called “udeng”. Mrs Phillips marshaled the Joondalup Primary School students in the parade.
Ibu Mulyana’s students played Indonesian bamboo musical instruments called “angklung”. They played “I still call Australia home” with the angklungs. The students wore Javanese bird dancing costumes.
The audience hugely applauded the Joondalup students as they passed by.
A big thank you to Mrs Jan East who helped us before the parade. We would like also to thank Mr Robert Lee who helped the group in the parade and helped Ibu Mulyana after the parade.
Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who watched the parade.
Well done students.

Colour Run
On behalf of Joondalup Primary Schools P&C we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated money for this year’s Colour Run. It was our second year putting on this fun event and with the support we are receiving via donations, volunteers and the great enthusiasm we see from the kids each year - it will continue in 2020. The run wouldn’t be possible without the help of volunteers, so a big shout out to all those who donated their valuable time. The funds raised from this year’s run will be combined with other funds raised to go towards items around the school.
EASTER RAFFLE
The P&C would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who generously purchased raffle tickets and kindly donated some chocolate treats for our annual Easter Raffle. We were able to make up 40 prizes for this year’s raffle thanks to everyone’s donations! It is with great delight that we get to hand these out to so many happy little winning faces each year. Once again these funds will be spent directly on our school, and despite it being such a busy start to the year – thank you so much for all your support.
The P&C Meetings are held every third Wednedsday of the month and take place in the School Library at 7.oopm. Everyone is welcome to attend!
Please see the P&C dates for the year.
