Dear families
NAIDOC Week
Yesterday the children and staff celebrated NAIDOC Week. Everyone participated in different activities including decorating stones, watching 'Big J and Little Cuz', making the Rainbow Serpent from wool, creating mosaic animals, and listening to stories.
I would like to thank Mrs Stacey Young for her leadership and organisation of this school wide event. Thank you also to the HASS Committee staff for their ideas and organisation, and to the many staff who were busy sorting out materials for the activities, and lead the day's events.
In the afternoon the combined school’s leadership team had afternoon tea with some of our families. It was an opportunity to find out about family connections across the community and to talk about the school. Thank you to Mrs Bev Shaw for making contact with all of the families.
We know that our celebrations are well ahead of the National event but we had our plans in places before the new dates were announced. COVID-19 has resulted in lots of last minute changes for everyone.
Staff news
At the beginning of next term we will welcome back Mrs Sandi Hird to her much loved Year 2 class. She can’t wait! I would like to thank Mrs Michelle Schoch for all of her work with the children and Mrs Sublet. Mrs Schoch will not be a stranger to us as she will be back as one of our regular relief teachers.
Stone hunters
We started this week with a stone hunt. Children collected white stones that the student councillors and faction leaders hid around the school grounds. Every stone collected and put in the faction bucket meant another point for the faction. Hopefully all of the stones have been found.
Faction competition
Children are awarded faction tokens for showing our school values of being respectful, safe and responsible. They have been picking up rubbish, remembering to wear their hats, getting to class on time after a break, keeping the verandas neat, and playing games safely.
The final faction token count for this term is:
1st | Green Faction - 1662 points |
2nd | Blue Faction - 1414 points |
3rd | Gold Faction - 1356 |
4th | Red Faction - 1354 |
Well done to Green Faction.....Again! The children will be having an icy pole before the end of Term.
Work around the school
Since the last newsletter a few more building and grounds projects have been finished or have progressed. The bore filter, which is by the basketball court, is now in action. The filter will take out the iron in the water to prevent further staining on the buildings.
The two transportable classrooms are now open for learning. The Education Support children and staff are already settled into one of the classrooms.
There has been some more progress on getting new interactive panels installed into classrooms. The tender has been awarded and we have met with the contractor to discuss timelines and installation requirements. Next term we hope that every classroom will have a brand new interactive panel.
A new pedestrian gate is being installed by the Kindy transportable. The gate will allow children to walk off Jolstra Crescent and straight into the Kindy playground and not walk through the carparks to get to their classrooms.
Assemblies
From next term we will recommence whole school assemblies which is something that I am very much looking forward to. At this stage we need to observe the 2 square metre physical distancing requirement for an audience. Once we have a plan so that parents can be in the audience, we will let you know.
What’s coming back?
Next term will see the return of some of our usual programs:
Running Club | Monday and Wednesday 8.15am on the School Oval |
Breakfast Club | Wednesday at 8.15am H Block |
School Banking | Thursday 8.15am - 8.45am B Block |
Gardening Club | Thursday after school - Start date 30th July 2020 |
Term Planner
A new term planner has been included with the newsletter. Please make sure that you keep up to date through the newsletter and app notifications so that you know what is happening and when.
Sporting Schools Grant
Congratulations to Mr Robert Lee, Phys Ed teacher, who successfully won a $650 grant for the school which he is using to purchase netball equipment.
Safe holidays
I would like to wish the staff and students a very happy and safe holiday. I hope that everyone enjoys having time to unwind and be school-free. For those who are travelling, stay safe.
Thank you to the staff for all of their work throughout Term 2. It has been challenging at times, normal in parts, and unusually busy, even though the calendar appeared to have less on it. Take a moment to appreciate a well deserved holiday.
A very special thank you to Miss Tammy Hanrahan and Mrs Carol Perry, Associate Principals, who have worked tirelessly maintaining the many practices and processes that we have in place and for problem solving as things have changed.
I am confident that we will return to Term 3 in a much better position than we were 10 weeks ago!
Term 3 commences on Monday 20thJuly 2020 and there are no school development days.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with Disability takes place every year.
A student is counted in the NCCD if they receive reasonable adjustments at school due to disability.
Please see information below from the NCCD for parents, guardians and carers of children with disabilities.

On Monday 22nd June the Social Justice Committee organsied a Pyjama Day for the School. Both students and staff had fun coming to school in their pyjamas and helped raised $494.40 for our sister school in Cambodia, Srang Primary School. Well done everyone!
The students in Year 6 participate in Cooperative Reading, which brings together strategies that enable students to set and reach their personal goals as well as promoting a cooperative learning community. Reading practices are explicitly taught and students have many opportunities to use their reading strategies. Students then present the texts they have read to the rest of the class through creative and interesting ways.

SPORT + SCIENCE
What is Sport Science?
Sport Science applies the study of science and sporting activities. The focus of sport science is to help maximise performance and endurance. It is used to help identify strengths and weaknesses so that a training program can be individualised and personal performance and endurance goals can be set.
The Year 5 and Year 6 students were willing candidates to participate in the inaugural Sport Science Program at JPS. The program uses a set of fitness test skills which provide solid baseline data. The data is used to track, compare and evaluate the fitness, strength, agility and mental progress of students throughout 2020.
The program tested students’ physical performance, endurance and mental capability across a 7 exercises:
- Timed 50 metre sprint
- Vertical Wall Jump
- Push Ups
- Cone Shuffle
- 3 Cone Drill
- Long Jump
- Wonderlic Test
Pre–testing involved a self-evaluation of their current physical status, followed by performance and endurance testing and lastly a self-reflection which focused on goal setting. Students were amazing to watch as they put themselves through their paces and were so positive about their individualised results.
Could you pass the JPS Sport Science Test? Ask any of the Year 5 or Year 6 students to put you through your paces!

Art and Music with Miss O'Connor
Lower Primary
The students have enjoyed playing on the instruments once again. They have worked as a whole class ensemble as they played along to 'We All Go Traveling By', a song about the different ways students travel to school. They have played on a range of different percussion instruments and practised sectional work as they needed to wait patiently for their part before they play!
Middle Primary
The classes have completed their unit of work on the Instruments of the Orchestra and have enjoyed once again playing on the boom whackers as they finished the term.
Upper Primary
The upper primary students have finished their work on dynamics and tempo. It has been a joy every week listening to new orchestral pieces and discussing the music with the students.
Art with Miss O’Connor
The Pre-Primary and Year 1 students have completed their very hungry caterpillars.
Choir started up again for Term 2. Tuesday and Thursday mornings have been a buzz as the eager Choir students have returned ready to sing once more! Choir has been truly missed over these last couple of months and I am excited to explore new pieces with the students.
If your child is interested in joining the Joondalup Schools Choir please ask them to visit Miss O’Connor in the Music room.
Self Portraits
Students across the campus used mirrors to observe their face. Drawing in pencil they created a self portrait and then added colour with watercolour paints. These portraits were created by students in years 1,2 and 6.
Pattern
Pattern is one of the principles of design. Students in years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 created a pattern on an A4 piece of paper using wax crayon. Next semester we will add a dye wash and then use the work to create a whole school collaborative artwork.
NAIDOC Celebrations
The artwork of John Smith Gumbula was viewed. He has a strong connection to culture and his people, drawing strength from those before him. Gumbula's work has lots of pattern.
The students in years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 drew an Australian animal and then filled the different shapes with patterns using felt pen.
Shape People
The students in Room 31 worked with the elements of shape and texture while creating these little people out of clay and wire.

The cycle of life continues, thanks to JPS students!
A biologist is a scientist who studies life, specifically organisms and their relationship to their environment. Biologists study humans, animals, plants and bacteria to gain a better understanding of how the body and nature works, and how external factors may influence each organism.
Term Two saw students at JPS step into the role of being a Biologist. The Year 2 students explored their own life cycle before comparing it to that of Jack and the Beanstalk. The Year 3 students became Taxonomists, collecting animals in the Nature Play Area and using a scientific key to classify them. The Year 4 students became parents and successfully germinated a bean seed so that it could complete a full life cycle. The Year 5 students have been deconstructing plants and animals to look at the adaptations that allow them to survive. Lastly, the Year 6 students explored the environmental conditions needed to grow yeast…they used this knowledge to make and bake their own bread!
Biology is a very relatable subject for students as it is all about life and living, something they do naturally on a daily basis and observe and engage with through play. This has been evident with the Year 4 students who have used their scientific knowledge of the plant life cycle to create crops in the Nature Play Area at recess and lunch. As young parents of about 300 different seeds, the cycle of life is in very good hands!

Dear Parents,
Re: Cashless Canteen Update
If you wish to order recess or lunch for your child, but don't wish to proceed with the online option; Quickcliq, then simply call the canteen & set up an account over phone via VISA or Mastercard.
Recess - your child needs to come to canteen in the morning on their way to class to place an order, it will then be ready at recess for collection.
Lunch – simply fill out a lunch bag & your child is to place it in their class room crate or drop at canteen on their way to class.
Monies spent will then be deducted from account accordingly. You will receive an SMS alert when funds are getting low.
Birthday cupcakes are still available to be ordered through Quickcliq or alternatively give us a call 9233 5818.
We would like to thank you for your positive feedback regarding move to a Cashless System. We appreciate it is a big change and have been overwhelmed by such a great response.
Thank you
Carolyn
