Biology in Term 2

Nerelle Phillips.jpg

The cycle of life continues, thanks to JPS students!

A biologist is a scientist who studies life, specifically organisms and their relationship to their environment. Biologists study humans, animals, plants and bacteria to gain a better understanding of how the body and nature works, and how external factors may influence each organism.

Term Two saw students at JPS step into the role of being a Biologist. The Year 2 students explored their own life cycle before comparing it to that of Jack and the Beanstalk. The Year 3 students became Taxonomists, collecting animals in the Nature Play Area and using a scientific key to classify them. The Year 4 students became parents and successfully germinated a bean seed so that it could complete a full life cycle. The Year 5 students have been deconstructing plants and animals to look at the adaptations that allow them to survive. Lastly, the Year 6 students explored the environmental conditions needed to grow yeast…they used this knowledge to make and bake their own bread!

Biology is a very relatable subject for students as it is all about life and living, something they do naturally on a daily basis and observe and engage with through play. This has been evident with the Year 4 students who have used their scientific knowledge of the plant life cycle to create crops in the Nature Play Area at recess and lunch. As young parents of about 300 different seeds, the cycle of life is in very good hands!
