Last week was the school’s NAIDOC Week! NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for students to learn and celebrate First Nation cultures and histories. Throughout the week the students have participated in a range of in-class activities including bracelet making, shared books and stories, and they recognised the achievements of Aboriginal people. Derek Nannup made a visit to the school and spent the day completing activities with groups of students. In between bursts of wet weather, Friday’s family picnic day commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country which was beautifully presented by Mickeel from Room 10, music from the choir and a drumming performance. The lunch ended with a highly competitive AFL Game between adults and students.
Upcoming assemblies
Next Tuesday 6 August the students from Rooms 18 and 20 will be presenting their assembly. The assembly will start at 2:15 pm in the Undercover area.
We also have a special assembly on Tuesday 20 August which is being presented by the School Choir before their One Big Voice performance on Thursday 22 August.
Musical dress up
Last Tuesday, our Year 6 students took part in their assembly which was all about musicals. Thank you to everyone who came to school dressed up for last Tuesday’s assembly. It was great to see so many staff and students dressed as someone from a musical. Grease was a popular choice with plenty of Pink Ladies and T-birds.
Go for Green and Gold – Dress up
This Friday 2 August everyone is welcome to come to school dressed in green and gold to celebrate Australia's participation in the Olympics. There is no gold coin donation required.
P&C Association meeting
There is a P&C Association meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 31 July 2024 commencing at 7:10 pm. Please come along.
Positive Behaviour in Schools
This week there will be more students coming to share morning tea to celebrate being the highest dojo winner in their class. We have a new focus which is ‘We do Our Best – We show good sporting spirit’. This is a timely focus as we ramp up our training for the Faction Athletics Carnival later in the term.
Our first focus for Term 3 was ‘We are Responsible – We are prepared, organised and ready to learn’. We will continue to remind children of the importance of being ready for the school day by having everything on their desks for the beginning of the day and knowing what is on the timetable. Being prepared and organised helps the day run smoother.

Music Composition with Garageband
In today's digital age, the role of the contemporary musician is rapidly evolving. Many artists now have access to home studios and can record, compose, and produce their own music using advanced digital software such as Ableton, Garageband, and Pro Tools. This shift has been recognised by leading institutions like WAAPA, which have recently added Composition & Music Technology to their music education disciplines.
Our middle and upper primary students are experiencing this modern approach firsthand through their use of Garageband. This engaging software allows them to experiment with live loops and create their own unique musical arrangements. By exploring and arranging loops in various musical genres and styles, students gain a deeper understanding of how different elements of music come together to define a particular style or genre.
NAIDOC picnic Choir Performance
Our choir recently performed at the NAIDOC Week picnic celebration, showcasing the song "Warrior." The piece was a tribute to Yagan, a prominent Noongar leader known for his role in defending his people’s rights and cultural heritage in the early 19th century. The choir did a fantastic job, and the students’ efforts were commendable, reflecting their dedication and hard work.

Welcome to the latest update from our vibrant Art Room.
I am delighted to share the incredible artistic journey the students have embarked upon during NAIDOC Week this year. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Australia's Indigenous peoples, the Art Room has been buzzing with creativity and innovation. The students have immersed themselves in various art forms, each reflecting the spirit of NAIDOC Week and celebrating Indigenous culture.
The younger students have been busy making yarn texture sticks, a project that not only introduces them to the world of textures but also hones their fine motor skills. These sticks are not just pieces of art but expressions of their imagination and learning journey.
The older students have taken their creativity to new heights by crafting sculptures using hay and yarn. Inspired by the works of Western Australian Artist Sharyn Egan, these sculptures are stunning examples of how art can blend different materials to tell a unique story. Throughout this experience, the students have learned about the significance of texture in art, exploring various techniques in sculpting and weaving, and, most importantly, gained a deeper appreciation for Indigenous art and culture.
The talented Year 6 students have been exploring the delightful world of Wayne Thiebaud, a renowned American artist celebrated for his contributions to the Pop Art era. Thiebaud is best known for his captivating paintings of cakes, which vividly capture the essence and appeal of these sweet treats. The students drew inspiration from Thiebaud's approach to creating their own cake masterpieces. They started by sketching out 3D cakes, paying close attention to the details that make each cake unique. The students then used oil pastels to bring their sketches to life, adding bright colours and utilising techniques like shading and blending to enhance the depth and realism of their cakes. The results are a vibrant collection of mouth-watering art pieces that not only pay homage to Thiebaud's style but also showcase the creativity and skill of our Year 6 students.
Stay tuned for more updates on their artistic journey!

The After School Garden Club is in full swing with many exciting things happening this term. There are currently a few places left. Get your permission slip in quick.
Recycling Station
Remember to keep on bringing in your items for recycling. See the attached as to what you can bring in. When dropping it in to the school please put it into the correct bin. Make sure items are not in a plastic bag and are clean. Our students diligently go through the bins in order to pack and send off for recycling and we don’t want nasty surprises for them. Our focus bin this newsletter is Coffee Pods – they need to be clean, not leaking and not in another bag. These are then packaged and sent to a local TerraCycle Material Recovery Facilities located in the same country in which the waste originates. Once sorted by category, the different material types are cleaned and then sent to third-party partners to process the materials into usable forms.
If you would like to know more about what you can do at home for recycling, go to www.terracycle.com.au
Chicken Coop is a Go!
The chicken coop has been partially funded by a grant from Waste Sorted Schools, with JESC topping up the remainder.
Containers for Change
Thanks to a kind donation from Emily Hamilton (MLA – Member for Joondalup), the school now has key tags with our school recycling number on it. So, you can take your 10c containers straight to a recycling point. Tags will be going home within the next week. Alternatively, you can still pop them in the big bin near admin and put the lids in the small green bin next to it. This is a joint fundraising effort between the P&C and Sustainability. We encourage you to support a worthy cause. The money raised will go towards the purchase of a table with seating which is made out of plastic bottles. The students have chosen this as their goal and initiative of giving back to the school. It will go into the vegetable garden area to make this area an outdoor learning space.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Environment & Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)

Welcome to Term 3. What an exciting term ahead, with some fun P&C events to look forward to.
We did our first Subway fundraiser for the NAIDOC picnic last Friday 26 July. It was a great success with a total of 222 subs made fresh for our hungry children and $330 going directly back to the school. Thank you to P&C member, Hwee Tan for coordinating this fundraiser.
The next exciting events are the Father's Day stall and Pyjama Disco. Both events are in the last week of August. The disco is FREE for all students, but you still must register via trybooking.com/CSCBN.
Look out for the opportunity for volunteering at the disco. We will require lots of parent helpers on the night to keep it running smoothly and keep our children safe and happy. We will be sending out the Disco Volunteer Sign-Up sheet soon.
Our next P&C meeting is Wednesday 31 July, 7:00 pm in the school staff room. Everyone is welcome.
