Free Dress Day
The Social Justice committee has planned a free dress day for this Friday 17 June 2022. A gold coin donation is requested with all money raised supporting Srang, our Sister School in Cambodia.
Proud moment!
Last week I went to the WA Museum Boola Bardip with the Year 6 classes. I watched our students learn about how the changes to the urban environment have impacted on local wildlife. Everyone found out about ‘lizard lounges’ and ‘bee hotels’, the advantage of a female wren being brown (as opposed to the male’s beautiful blue) and the benefits of keeping large trees for native birds and insects to have a place to shelter and gather food.
From the quality of the questions asked by students, the level of student vocabulary during discussions, to the way in which everyone worked as a group, and the exemplary student behaviour made me one very proud principal. My level of pride was so high I called Mum and Dad to tell them how fantastic the day was. Behind great students are years of quality teaching and support so thank you to the staff for their contributions, both big and small.
It was a fantastic day to leave the office and spend some extended time with the children and staff.
Kindy Playground Refurbishment – It’s coming!
The commencement of works to refurbish the Kindy playground will start Friday 17 June 2022. Unfortunately, to allow for this, the Kindy gate cannot be used and parking in this area will not be permitted. We are hoping that after the COVID-related and materials shortage delay, we will see the project completed in time for Term 3 (weather permitting). Access through gates 6 or 11.
Please see the attached map for details on gate access and parking areas.
During the last two weeks of this term, students will have access to the junior playground on the other side of E Block.
Winter Lightning Carnival
On Friday 24 June some of the children from Years 4,5 and 6 will be representing the school at the Winter Lightning Carnival. Good luck to the teams who are playing netball, AFL, soccer, or league tag (rugby) against Connolly and Currambine primary schools.
Safety reminders
Please make sure you park in designated areas only as you risk being fined by the City of Joondalup, children may be injured and the local residents need to be able to go about their business without family cars blocking access.
When on school grounds please keep your dog on a lead and close beside you.

Year 6 Excursion to WA Museum Boola Bardip
The Year 6's from both Joondalup Primary and Joondalup Education Support Centre attended WA Museum Boola Bardip to participate in a workshop analysing the human impact on the urban environment. The students learnt about how the Australian Magpie, Splendid Fairy-wren and the Quenda have adapted to living in an urban environment. The students got to explore the new museum and especially loved the Wildlife Gallery as they learnt lots of new information about all the animals around us. Everyone enjoyed getting to experience the new museum and having the opportunity to learn outside the regular classroom environment.
The 3 Little Pigs…was the brick house really the strongest?
Throughout Term 2, the students in Pre-Primary have been using their senses to explore, identify and compare the properties of a variety of materials around the school grounds. To further build upon these experiences, students read the story of The 3 Little Pigs and explored the materials that each little pig had chosen to build its house…a house of straw, a house of sticks and a house of bricks. The students were given the challenge to find out if the brick house was really the strongest out of the three houses.
They used their science skills to come up with a plan to find the materials needed to build the three houses. Together they collected straw from the Garden of Weedin, sticks from the Nature Play Area and bricks from the Tinker Space. In groups they explored and described the properties of each of the materials and designed and built the 3 Little Pig’s houses.
With a visit from the Big Bad Wolf (also known as Gardener Jack) and a mighty strong huff and puff, the houses were tested…and just like the students had predicted the house of bricks was definitely the strongest because ‘bricks are heavy, strong and rectangular which means you can stack them and there are no gaps in between them for the wind to blow them down.’

Let’s trash talk.
There is one thing we all do every single day without even thinking twice about it. We put something in the bin! Thinking about where the WASTE goes and making the best bin-based decisions we can, goes a long way towards taking the pressure off the planet!
During week 7 and 8, the students from Kindy to Year 6 were involved in a SUEZ Waste incursion with the aim of educating students on how to recognise and understand what waste goes into a red lid, yellow lid and green lid bin.
Remy, Raf and Riley are The Recoverables: three waste wise superheroes each with their own focus and special powers, united in their mission to help students:
- reduce,
- reuse and
- recycle more of our waste.
Together, with the help of The Recoverables, the students engaged in a variety of bin-based sorting activities and realised that they too possess a waste wise super power…they have the power to reduce, reuse and recycle waste properly, in order to create a more sustainable future!
What can YOU do?
Engage in trash talk with your children, and take the pressure off our planet!
As part of Science and Sustainability, Joondalup Primary School signed up for a Wonder Recycling Rewards program, which focused on the recycling and repurposing of soft plastic bread bags.
At the start of Term 2, the students were invited to accept this recycling mission:
- Collect as many soft bread bags as you can.
- Return them to your Block, where they will be stored in the Wonder Recycling box.
- For every 5kg of soft plastic bread bags…your Block can earn $500.
Seven weeks after the mission started, I have sent off FOUR FULL boxes to Red Cycle.
So…who are the winners?
Our Planet!
Over the course of Term 2 (in seven weeks), students at Joondalup Primary School have recycled 25kg of soft plastic bags.
Who are the Block winners?
The winners will be announced on Tuesday 21 June at the School Assembly.
In addition to collecting soft plastic bags, the students have also been collecting plastic bread tags. Over the seven weeks, the students across the school have collected 7.5kg of plastic bread tags. These tags are given to Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. The tags are recycled nationally in Australia and used to raise funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people.

Joondalup Primary School students are to be commended on their commitment to being change makers for the future. Keep bringing in your soft plastic bags and bread tags and as a community, we will help create a more sustainable future.
Howdy partners!
Find a flannelette shirt, jeans, boots and of course a cowboy hat and please join the Year 6s in dressing up in Country and Western attire for their hoedown performance at the assembly on Tuesday 21 June at 2:15 pm. This is a whole school dress up day and everyone is encouraged to join in. No gold coin donations.
Yee-Haw!
