Week 4 and we’re alright!
We have had a very productive week. It's been busy but I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff, spend time in the playground and visit classrooms. The children have been very welcoming and keen to introduce themselves to me. It has been a privilege to have chats to find out what they like about school.
School development day
Last Monday the staff spent the day finding out about me, what I value and how I like schools to operate. We shared some laughs and it was great to have the opportunity to have conversations. I asked the staff to provide me with some comments about what they value about school leadership and where they would like me to start. Their honesty was greatly appreciated and gives me some clear direction. Of course, some of their ideas are going to take longer than a week to implement but it's good to have some things to work towards.
The staff also reflected on the business plan and the actions that need to happen by the end of the year, by the middle of 2020, and the end of the year. With all business plans it is easy to think that three years is a long time but the reality is that we need to get things into place to achieve the targets that have been set and for the strategies to be embedded into the classroom. I look forward to providing you with updates about the work being done by the staff.
Arts Night – Well done!
The Arts Night was a fabulous event. I am so glad that I was able to attend and enjoyed being able to sit back and see the children perform. Thank you to everyone who attended; your support of this event was wonderful. I would like to acknowledge the many hours invested by Miss Rhiannon O'Connor, Music specialist, and Mrs Helen Sweet, Visual Art specialist. It was a huge effort to celebrate the talents of the children. A very special thank you Ibu Mulyana, Indonesian specialist, who helped the children to show off their skills to play Angklung. Thank you also to Mr Rory Critchley who emceed the evening.

Thank you also to the P&C Association and Candlewood IGA who are contributing to the evening.
Year 6 Camp
Planning for camp continues and I am sure that the Year 6s and staff will have a wonderful week away. I am looking forward to spending some time at the camp to see the children challenge themselves in a range of activities. Miss Mercer has had two days out of the classroom to get the paperwork organised and to finalise arrangements.

Holly is the epitome of a Joondalup Kid, her kindness and understanding is an asset to our school. She brightens every day with her positive attitude and thoughtful nature. Every school would be lucky to have someone like Holly.
Arts Night took place on the 29th October and what an incredible night it was. The whole school was buzzing with excitement and there was a real community feel as students, families and staff all came together to celebrate The Arts.
I would like to say thank you to all of the students and families for joining us on the night. Thank you to the P&C for your generous raffle donation and the Canteen for supplying food. Last but not least, to all of the Joondalup Schools staff members who helped put the night together.
“Remember the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.” Recently, Joondalup Primary School attended the inaugural dodgeball tournament hosted by Beldon Primary School.
Joondalup, Craigie Heights, Beldon and Poseidon Primary students played a round robin tournament. The modified dodgeball games consisted of 2x10mins halves and each school played a total of three games. Resulting in each student playing approximately an hour of dodgeball!
Leading up to the event, Physical Education in term three had a large focus on sports involving throwing as well as practicing good communication, timing and teamwork within a sporting environment. From here the students developed trust within each other and learnt to always encourage their teammates. This was very evident during the games.
Joondalup played with a very disciplined and selfless style. The students would patiently focus on keeping their players in the game then strike when the time was right. However, the biggest defining feature of the Joondalup Primary School students was their ability to work efficiently and effectively as a team. Joondalup Primary School was the only school to get all the other teams out at some point during the game and usually did so with all their players still in.
Much credit goes to the students who organised their own training sessions at lunch time and practiced in Physical Education classes. Thank you to the rest of the school who helped train the interschool team by providing people to play against. In the end Joondalup came second by a single cone. However, in the process of training the dodgeball team, the etiquette demonstrated by the students has filtered into to the rest of the school, elevating sportsmanship to an extremely high standard. That is a bigger victory than we could have asked for.
Thank you to Bec Carstairs and Jayne Butler for your help on the day and all the parents that took time out of their busy schedules to help support the school and the students. We love your passion.
Well done to all the students involved. Your dedication and perseverance was nothing short of inspirational and you have established yourselves as fantastic role models for the school and sport.

Being Selfless
Teaching kids to be selfless in a world that is full of self-centeredness can be tricky. We all have a lot going on in our lives and it is hard to live with purpose with our busy schedules and a full brain.
I have had this a lot with my own children, especially when they are tired and have many commitments; it is easy to just worry about what is happening to you and not to think of how others are feeling.
“We live in a selfie culture. Our kids can hardly escape it. They’re bombarded with announcements of how many likes friends receive on social media, and even their clothing encourages them to, “Love your selfie!”
So how do we encourage our kids to think of others before themselves? The last thing that I say to my kids before sending them off to school each day is “Choose to be kind”. I am hoping that it at least makes them think before acting.
Here are some tips to help raise selfless kids in today’s world, I have loved these tips and tried many of them, and I hope you find them helpful too.

Indonesian dance and music performance at the 2019 Arts Night
Selected students from Rooms 8, 10, 11 and 12 performed an Indonesian umbrella dance and angklung music for the Joondalup Schools Art Night. The students who played the angklung (Indonesian bamboo musical instruments) wore traditional costumes from Java and Sumatera Island.
The dance and angklung performance took place in the garden in front of the Art Room. Many parents and students enjoyed watching the show.
We would like to thank Ms Mel Hunt who helped Ibu Mulyana with the make-up for the girl dancers.
Thanks to the parents and guardians who watched our performance.
The performance was a warm-up for the angklung players as they will play angklung Christmas carols at Myer Department Store, Joondalup on the 6th of December. Everyone is invited to watch the performance.
Well done students.
