New Online Permission Forms- Term Three
The Department of Education has recently reviewed the Online Policies for students. As part of this process children and/or their parents/care givers need to complete an Online Services Acceptable Use Agreement. There is a form for students in Kindergarten to Year Two which sets out the rules for students using online environments and a different form for students in Year Three to Six. The forms create an opportunity for parents to reinforce the behaviours that ensure children are safe online. Forms will be sent home with the children next term.

P&C
Our Parents & Citizens aim is to support the school to provide a standard of education and facilities to your children that would otherwise not be available if we were to rely solely on Government funding. P&C meetings are held on a monthly basis throughout the year for a maximum duration of 90 minutes and are advertised at least seven days in advance. Newcomers are welcome. In the past the P&C have provided much needed funds to the school which has enabled us to purchase end of year book awards, essential education resources and subsidise the Year 6 camp & much more. They have recently approved the following requests from staff, installation of an outdoor sink in the garden club area value of $650, greenhouse and work bench for after school garden club (contribution of $1000 towards the total amount), new worm farm value of $850 and two play kitchens value of $600. Thank you for all of your support, you are all fabulous individuals and as a team, you are sensational.
Have a fantastic holiday with you children.
Term 3 will commence on Monday 22nd July.

Winter Lightning Carnival
Good players inspire themselves, great players inspire others. If you were fortunate enough to be a spectator at the Winter Lightning Carnival, you would have found the Joondalup Primary School students to be inspirational.
Shortly after Cross Country, selected Yr 4, 5 and 6 students switched their focus to Netball, Soccer and AFL. They trained at lunch time and after school to sharpen their skills in each sport and build team comradery.
HBF Arena was the site where Joondalup Primary School met with Currumbine Primary School and Edgewater Primary School to engage in a day full of sporting fun.
Even though Joondalup Primary School performed well, most notable was the way students conducted themselves during the day. The feedback from the staff, parents, umpires and organisers was Joondalup has a sensational sense of sportsmanship.
This sportsmanship was highlighted in many ways however an outstanding story comes from the boys soccer. The boys were not in the final however they did console the losing school after their penalty loss. It is moments like this that make us extremely proud of the students and how they represent the community. Well done boys.
Behind the students, are the parents and guardians. Thank you for your help in adjusting your time to picking up the students after school and being there on the day. It is very uplifting for the students to see so many familiar faces to support them.
Special thanks goes to Bec and Bev for sending through so many photos of the day. Matt, Liz and Danielle for giving up their time and coaching the netball. Rob and Sean for fully engaging the students and building a great AFL team. Your efforts were very well reflected in the success of the students.
Thank you very much to the staff, who helped organise the event and supervised or coached on the day. It was a very big day and your support was more than welcomed.
The results:
- AFL: 2nd
- Netball Division One: 1st and 4th
- Netball Division Two: 1st
- Soccer Boys: 4th
- Soccer Girls: 3rd
Congratulations to the AFL team for getting into the grand final. Congratulations also to the Netball A team and the Netball C team for winning their divisions.

AFL – Joondalup Kinross Junior Football Club (Windermere Oval)
AFL
AFL, a sport with many exciting opportunities for young men and women. With this in mind and in preparation for the Winter Lightning Carnival, Joondalup Primary School invited the West Perth Falcons to swoop in and take over Physical Education classes, leaving the students flying high on the excitement of the game.
West Perth Football club came to Joondalup and taught students the many lessons associated with team sports and the fundamental movement skills and tactics specific to AFL. The goal of the visit was to maximise the enjoyment of the students and they successfully achieved this outcome.
The students were provided with a safe, fun and fair environment to develop their skills and were taught about fairness, equality, respect, teamwork and encouragement. A great opportunity to continue learning in this setting outside of school hours is at the Joondalup Kinross Junior Football Club. They have many close ties with the Joondalup school community and train at Windermere Oval, directly across from the school.
The following are details about their programs:
Auskick is for children wanting to learn all the skills of AFL. Children aged 5 – 7 years (Pre-Primary to Year 2) are eligible to play Auskick.
Games are played on Saturday morning at the Windermere oval in Joondalup.
Modified AFL is for children aged 8 and above (Year 3 to Year 6).
The games are played at various local grounds against local teams on Sundays.
Game times vary depending on the age groups. Times start from 8:30 am.
Open Rules is for children in Years 7 – 12. The games are played at various local grounds against local teams.
Girl’s AFL is a 15 week program for girls in Year 4 – 12. This is a Friday night program played under lights.
Starkick was introduced to the club in 2016 and allows children with special needs to enjoy football.
If you are interested in AFL, the Joondalup Kinross Junior Football Club can be contacted via phone 0450 013 320, e-mail registar@jetsjfc.com.au or by visiting their website at https://www.jetsjfc.com.au/.
Circus Skills with Mr Lee
Roll up, roll up to the greatest show on earth. The school has been transformed into a circus where the sport's shed is sideshow alley and the undercover area is the big top, encompassing the main arena where you will find the stars of the show, the students.
The long history Joondalup Primary School shares with circus activities allows for young children to have fun and explore opportunities not commonly found at other schools.
Circus skills uses the essence of circus, that is, fun, playfulness, skills and teamwork, to help participants embrace being active, cooperative and creative. It is about harnessing the excitement that people feel when they have been to a circus and using that excitement to fully engage students in physical challenges.
Circus activities draws on human skills such as balancing, manipulation of the body, dexterity and our need to be children, to pretend and to play games that challenge our minds and bodies while having fun.
Circus at any level also requires participants to be great team players. It helps students to develop their skills and appreciation of communication, cooperation and care of self and others.

Dragons
The students in Rooms 10 & 11 created these amazing dragons. They were given a limited choice of mediums including, felt pen, ink, watercolour pencils and paints.
Fish with Feelings
The Pre- Primary students worked with line to describe emotions. A variety of techniques and mediums were then used to create the collages.
Bees
The students in Rooms 18, 19 & 20 have been studying bees. They did an observed drawing of a bee from a photograph and then used felt pen and ink to add colour. The bee hive was printed with the focus on tessellation.
Abstract Landscape
The students in Rooms 12 & 13 worked with the element of value to create these simple landscapes. The work was embellished with silver or gold paint marker.
Flowers and Snails
The Year 1 students created these floral sculptures after viewing the work of Georgia O’Keeffe.
The snails were created using a clay coil, which was then fired and glazed.

The 3 Little Pigs
The 3 Little Pigs…was the brick house really the strongest?
Throughout Term Two, the students in Pre-Primary have been using their senses to explore, identify and compare the properties of a variety of materials around the school grounds. To further build upon these experiences, the students read the story of The 3 Little Pigs and explored the materials that each little pig had chosen to build its house…a house of straw, a house of sticks and a house of bricks. The students were given the challenge to find out if the brick house was really the strongest out of the three houses.
The students used their science skills to come up with a plan to find the materials needed to build the three houses. Together they collected straw from the Garden of Weedin, sticks from the Nature Play Area and bricks from the Tinker Space. In groups they explored and described the property of each of the materials and designed and built the 3 Little Pig’s houses.
With a visit from the Big Bad Wolf and a fan of strong fresh air, the houses were tested…and just like the students had predicted the house of bricks was definitely the strongest because ‘bricks are heavy and strong, rectangular which means you can stack them and there are no gaps in between them for the wind to blow them down.’
Connecting Joondalup Primary School to Life changing Science.
In the Science Laboratory throughout Term Two, students from Room 10 and Room 11 have been involved in a variety scientific investigations that have explored the molecular structure of solids, liquids and gases through the manipulation of materials. As part of building real life experiences beyond the laboratory, an hour skype call was held with Biophysicist, Dr Donna Whelan from La Trobe University on Wednesday 5 July.
Dr Donna Whelan is a Bruce Stone Fellow in Chemical Biology based in Bendigo as a part of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science. She is currently building a new, next-generation single molecule microscope, and exploring DNA damage and repair pathways. Her collaborations include research into the underlying mechanisms of host-virus interactions, neurodegeneration, and proteolysis.
Prior to starting her own lab in Bendigo, Donna completed her PhD at Monash University, developing advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques for applications in biophysical research. During her PhD she constructed cutting-edge single molecule super-resolution microscopes and made extensive use of the Australian Synchrotron. Following this, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in New York University’s School of Medicine under the supervision of Dr Eli Rothenberg, focusing on applying super resolution imaging to map the cellular repair pathway of DNA double strand breaks.

Donna took students on her scientific journey from birth right to her current position at La Trobe University where she has built a highly specialised microscope that is 1000 times more powerful than a regular fluorescence microscope – assisting into her research into fundamental biology, and DNA damaging diseases such as cancer.
As a result of this amazing opportunity, the JPS scientists have witnessed how important science is in our future and how they too can become life changing scientists

Music and Choir News with Miss O'Connor
What an exciting term it has been. The Music room has been buzzing with activity, with the junior levels exploring the instruments of the orchestra, the middle school singing and playing on the instruments and the senior students continuing with their ukulele skills. As the term has come to an end, the students have had fun playing on the boomwhackers.
Ocean Reef Senior High School Music student Visit
On Monday 1st July the Year 11 and 12 students from Ocean Reef Senior High performed for the Year 4, 5 and 6 students of Joondalup Schools. The students showcased a range of instruments, such as a violin and guitar duo, solo saxophone and a guitar ensemble. The students finished by performing two songs with the Year 11/12 Rock Band. This was just a small showcase of the music opportunities that students have in high school and we were very grateful for the visit from Ocean Reef Senior High School!
The Choir has been hard at work this term preparing for their assembly and for Arts Night. Once again I would like to thank the students and families for your ongoing support of the Joondalup Choir.
