Western Australia Week Celebrations
The activities organised by Stacey Young and her team were a great success. The students had a marvellous time participating in the games that were played in school yards many years ago. The whole school campus photos taken by the drone look amazing! A big thank you to Stacey for organising the drone to take all the photos of our wonderful students and staff in the outline of W A. Can you find your child?
Joondalup Student Award
Chloe is a very conscientious student who tries her best in all subject areas. She works well with her friends and enjoys celebrating their successes with them. Chloe is a kind, caring and thoughtful student who is always looking for ways that she can help other students. She has a 'heart of gold' and we are so lucky she is a member of our class. Congratulations, Chloe.
Mathematics Award
Owen displays amazing Mathematics skills and is always full of enthusiasm. He enjoys applying his knowledge of numbers to solve more complex problems with accuracy. Owen displays an exceptional ability to complete mental Mathematics tasks with confidence. Owen should feel very proud of what a brilliant Mathematician he is.
School Guidelines Updates
In light of our full day Professional Development on Friendly Schools on Friday 31st May, we are currently revising and updating our Behavior Management Guidelines and our whole school Health document to reflect some of the Friendly Schools strategies.
Last day of school term
The last day of the school term is Friday 5th July. We will then return to school on Monday 22nd July.
School Photos
School photos are complete. It usually takes a few weeks for Kapture to process and return the photos. I expect they will arrive at the school early next term.
Canteen
Our campus canteen manager Carolyn will be taking long service leave from Monday 24th June until Tuesday 6th August. The canteen will remain open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays during these dates, however will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Ongoing Parking issues
Over the past week we have met with members from both the City of Joondalup and the Department of Education to discuss solutions to the parking congestion around the school in mornings and afternoons. A number of options were discussed, and many ideas were not possible because of road rules, and the verge space required. Ideas that have been accepted for further possible planning include;
- Extension of the current car parking bays at Windemere Oval
- An additional 2 ACROD bays in the staff car park
- 90 degree parking along Jolstra Ave – outside E Block
- Redesigning the current E Block staff carpark to allow for more staff bays (this will alleviate street parking)
- Researching the possibility of angled parking on Blue Mountain Drive and at Jolstra Ave (near basketball court)
We will continue to keep you updated with developments as they become available.
Flus and Colds Season
From time to time children do get sick. It is sometimes unavoidable. When your child is sick please base your decision on keeping your child at home with the health of other students and staff in mind. It is best to avoid spreading germs and bugs at school and allowing your child to rest and recuperate before sending them back to school.
Annual Report
The school’s 2018 Annual Report is available on the school’s web page, click on the link to read the report.

Once again we were blessed with a beautiful, warm start to our WA festivities. We began the week with the creation of a map of WA including reasons why this is a great state to live in. On Wednesday both schools made a huge WA on the oval and we had some fabulous drone photos taken. At lunchtime students made bookmarks. On Thursday the weather turned windy but that did not stop us from having a great time on the oval playing many tabloid games such as marbles, knucklebones and elastics. We also listened to some great Australian tunes.
It was wonderful to see so many students dressed in WA themed clothes and our wonderful teachers too. Thank you to all the staff and students for another successful WA week.

Mrs Young has a CATASTROPHIC PROBLEM!
Being a scientist means that you are able to hypothesise and problem solve when it comes to real world problems. The scientists in Year 2 and Year 2/3 were confronted with a very large dilemma when Mrs Young found she had a catastrophic problem with her coffee…it went COLD too quickly!
This was the perfect opportunity for our Year 2 and Year 2/3 scientist to help Mrs Young solve her coffee catastrophe. As a class, they predicted the possible reasons for Mrs Young’s coffee going cold and then decided that they would set up the following scientific investigation to test their hypotheses’.
As a result of the investigation, the students identified from their results that a plastic cup would keep Mrs Young’s coffee hotter for longer than a metal, ceramic or paper cup would…let’s just say that the results were very surprising!

In Room 4 we have been learning about Joondalup’s history. After reading The Dreaming story of the Charnok Woman, the students drew pictures of what they think she looked like.
The original inhabitants of this area were the Oor-dal-kalla people, the family group of Yellagonga, a prominent Aboriginal elder highly regarded in Nyoongar culture. It is from the Oor-dal-kalla people that Joondalup derives its name. The Nyoongar word is Doondalup and it means ‘the lake that glistens’.
The story of the spirit women, Charnok Woman, is particularly important to Joondalup.
Back in the dreamtime there was a tall spirit man and a tall spirit woman called Charnok People. The Charnok woman had long white hair down to her back. In the darkness of the dreamtime, the spirit woman saw a small pair of eyes looking up at her. She picked up this little being. It was a spirit child. She did not want to part with this child so she placed it in her long white hair and the child held on tight. As she travelled she collected more and more of these spirit children. As she crossed a large valley that the Waugal created, which we now know as the Swan River, she left her footprint. We know this place today as Blackwall Reach. The spirit woman continued north as the male Waugal created the lakes toward the north collecting more and more spirit children as she travelled. She realised what she was doing was wrong and had to place the spirit children back. She remembered the spirit man collecting the children and eating them. She had to stop him so she headed south where she last saw him. On her way she came across spirit children that hadn’t been collected and they began to cry for the children in her hair. They turned themselves into Koolbardie the magpie and picked the children from her hair. When the children hit the ground they turned to stone... she headed south leaving a trail of stone behind her leading to the largest stone (Kartakitch), Wave Rock, where she stepped onto the stone and was lifted into the sky. Her hair is the Milky Way and the stars in the sky represent those children she collected. She knew she could never return to the land as her punishment. If you go to Lake Joondalup during a full moon, it is said that you can see her long white hair reflecting from the stars above. So this place is called Joondalup (place of the long white hair.) The lake is often referred to as the water that glistens.

Abstract Landscape
The students in Years 3 & 4 explored the element of line. They then used line to describe different things in a landscape. The areas created by the lines were then painted using ink.
Dinosaur Fossils
The artwork was inspired by the recent discovery of fossils in an underground opal mine in outback NSW. The discovery included the remains from 100-million-year-old herd of dinosaurs and a new species.
The year one students were directed to draw the dinosaur skeleton. They used oil pastel and put a dye wash over the top.
Blue Wrens
The Pre-Primary students worked with clay to create blue wrens. They used a variety of objects and pressed texture onto the birds. After the bisque firing the students glazed the bodies in royal blue and added a black underglaze and a clear glaze to the beak and eye. The wrens were fired again and then the students added the wire and sticks to complete their work.
Protective Behaviours
Protective Behaviours is taught at school from K-6. One of the strategies taught is called the Safe 5”. This is one strategy that you can also use at home with your children
A great way to speak with your children about it, is to ask them about their Early Warning Signs. This could be butterflies in the tummy, sweaty palms, jelly legs and fast beating heart. Also, what they do when they get these early warning signs? Who do they feel safe talking to?
Ask them about their “Safe 5”. In Term One we went through our “Safe 5” hand and nominated 5 people that they could talk to if they had worries. The 5 people identified need to be reviewed regularly to ensure the people nominated are still around and a part of the children’s everyday lives.
Some examples of who they may nominate are;
- Mum/Dad
- Nanna/Grandad
- Aunty/Uncle
- Teacher
- Chaplain
- Coach (footy, netball, tennis, swimming)
There are also some great books that you can read with your children that could help open up the conversation. Maggie Dent has some great resources that she recommends.
