School Development Day Friday 31st May
All staff will be participating in a whole day professional development on Friendly Schools. Friendly Schools is the first anti-bullying initiative for schools developed through extensive research with Australian children and adolescents. It is recognised nationally and internationally as a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that can reduce bullying behaviour. The Friendly Schools initiative has been designed to align with both the Australian Curriculum and the National Safe Schools Framework.
Good Standing Policy
A copy of the school’s Good Standing Policy is attached to this Newsletter. This policy, which is a requirement of the Minister of Education’s Violence in Schools strategy, is mandatory for all schools. The policy will apply to students in Years Three through to Six. Children who lose Good Standing will be unable to participate in various school events, though children will have three opportunities to adjust their behaviour prior to losing good standing. This policy will come into effect from the commencement of Week Five of Term Two. The Minister of Education’s strategy will also see suspension used more often as a consequence of intention of violence towards students and staff, however, as is always the case our staff will be keen to work with students and families to ensure we support students to make safe and appropriate choices.
School Board News
The last School Board meeting was on Wednesday 15th May. Below are some of the items we discussed at the meeting.
- Mindfulness Activity
- Violence in Schools Document
- Good Standing Guidelines
- Finances
- Voluntary Contributions
- News from Tanya our P&C President
P&C
Our P&C have run a number of events throughout the semester – the latest being at last weekend’s election. They have raised a huge amount of money over the last few events - $835 from the Easter raffle, $3085.52 from the colour run, and $583.85 from the Mother’s Day stall. This is fantastic and could not have been done without the support of all families, thank you! The P&C have asked us for a “wishlist” of items to improve the school. We have given this to the P&C and they will make decisions about what they feel would be most beneficial to our campus and will donate this to the school.
Red Faction Sausage Sizzle
On Monday 27th May, students in the Red Faction will be having a sausage sizzle at lunch time. The sausage sizzle is free, so students in Red Faction do not need to bring lunch in on Monday. The sausage sizzle is the prize the faction wins for having the most faction points in Term One this year.
The Faction Cross Country
The Faction Cross Country Carnival is on 30th May at Windemere Oval. Please see attached for the race schedule. Runners from Year 3 to 6 will be selected from the carnival to represent the school in the interschool carnival in Term 3.
WA WEEK Celebrations Thursday the 6th June
The campus will be celebrating WA Week on Thursday the 6th June. We will be participating in games on and around the oval between recess and lunch. It will be a dress up day with students being encouraged to wear State colours, olden day or sporting team clothes.
Canteen Trading Hours Change
Carolyn will be taking long service leave from the 24th June until the 6th August. The canteen will remain open with a modified menu on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
It will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during those dates.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
The campus have again registered for the Woolworths Earn and Learn program. Between 1 May and 25 June 2019 please collect as many stickers as you can. (For every $10 spent at Woolworths you get a sticker.) The more stickers we receive the more resources we will be able to purchase. Please make sure your stickers have been placed on a sticker sheet (available from the office) and then place the sticker sheet inside of the box which is located outside of the administration building. Thank you for supporting our schools.
A big Congratulations to our Merit Award Winners from the Assembly held on Friday 10th May.

This term in our CoderDojo Club, the students across the campus are involved in a game design competition. The students are using Bloxels software and have to design, build and troubleshoot a platform game. The students are learning to use rules of physics to create levels that are playable but challenging. They are also using power ups, collectables, enemies and obstacles to create an immersive gaming experience.
The CoderDojo sessions are open to students from both schools – Years P-3 are every Monday lunchtime, and Years 4-6 every Friday lunchtime.

Science News with Mrs Phillips
Let the party begin…
Happy anniversary to Chemistry,
Happy anniversary to Chemistry,
Happy anniversary to ‘The Periodic Table’,
Happy anniversary to Chemistry!
During week one, students learned how to read The Periodic Table, understand the elements and their chemical symbol and identify if the element existed as a solid, liquid or gas at room temperature. The students designed their own ‘elemental’ party hats to begin the celebrations.
As part of week two celebrations, students explored the states of matter that are displayed on the table and methods in which these states of matter can be changed by playing with party balloons that were filled with ice, water and oxygen. With party hats and balloons as part of our learning, the anniversary celebrations had definitely begun.
Week three and four focused on changing state and observing the physical and chemical reactions that can occur when making Periodic Table cupcakes. The students became Baker’s and they had to understand the chemistry behind the mixtures they were making, discussing the change of state and whether the changes were reversible or irreversible.
It has been a chemically exciting start to Term Two and the anniversary celebrations will continue each week.
Science Enrichment Program
The International Year of the Periodic Table
Joondalup Primary School offers an after school science program that aims to inspire young people to become science leaders. The program is designed to cultivate and pass on a sense of wonderment and scientific curiosity by engaging students in a variety of hand-on investigations that explore all the fields of science as taught in the Australian Curriculum.
The United Nations has designated 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table. The Year will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the tables creation by Dmitry Mendeleev. The after school program will explore all things ‘elemental’ in a variety of hands-on investigations by exploring the endless and magical realms of combining elements to create mixtures, suspensions and solutions. The program will also include an excursion to Belridge Secondary College Science Laboratory.
Congratulations to the following Year Five students who have been chosen for the program in Term Two; Fajri, Imogen, Harvey, Amelia, Linde, Wes, Angus, Agok, David and Cloe.

Running Club
Running Club in Term One was a runaway success. This club has grown at a significant pace and is leading Joondalup students towards a step in the right direction.
Running at 8:15am-8:45am Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, the students are developing their fitness and enjoying themselves at the same time. This is great preparation for many of the sports played at school and a fantastic way to train for the upcoming Cross Country (Pre-Primary – Year 6, Thursday 30th May) and Winter Lightning Carnival (Years 5-6, Thursday 20th June).
Mrs Egan, Mrs Carstairs and Mr Lee would like to thank all the students who have been coming down and enjoying all the fun and fitness.
We would love to encourage more students to join. If you are not able to make it to school by 8:15am, you are very welcome to join in when you arrive.
For more information, please see Mr Lee or Mrs Egan. Consent forms are available at the school admin or by clicking on the link provided below.
Hope to see you there.

Garden of Weedin & Garden Club News
A big welcome back for Term Two. Garden club has already started so please get your forms back to school asap. Numbers are limited this term. Below are the days that Garden Club will be on this term.
- Week 5 - Wednesday 29th May
- Week 6 - Wednesday 5th June
- Week 8 - Wednesday 19th June
- Week 9 - Wednesday 27th June (Final Garden Club for Term 2)
Now that the weather is a little unpredictable if rain is forecast a notice will be pushed out via the schools apps by 3pm the preceding day.
Mark from Tucker Bush came to the school to help us with the selection and planting our new Native Bush Tucker garden as part of our $1 000 grant from Woolworths and Landcare. Rooms 19, 21 and the Moordijt Kadadjiny Group all attended and will be responsible for this project. Our wonderful Bev Shaw who runs the Moodijt Group is researching uses of the plants with the club and will make signs for the garden.
It is planned to have the Noongar Seasonal Calendar made into a large board. Please note there are many different versions of this calendar and many different spellings for the word Noongar. Noongar means ‘a person of the south-west of Western Australia,’ or the name for the ‘original inhabitants of the south-west of Western Australia’ and are one of the largest Aboriginal cultural blocks in Australia.
In the south west of Australia, the Nyoongar seasonal calendar includes six different seasons in a yearly cycle.
These are Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. Each of the six seasons represents and explains the seasonal changes we see annually. The flowering of many different plants is a helpful indicator that the seasons are changing.
The Nyoongar seasons can be long or short and are indicated by what is happening and changing around us rather than by dates on a calendar.
This six-season calendar is extremely important to Nyoongar people, as it is a guide to what nature is doing at every stage of the year, as well as understanding respect for the land in relation to plant and animal fertility cycles and land and animal preservation.
The children and staff are looking forward to working and learning from this project and we’ll keep you updated.
