Winter Carnival
Last Friday 18th June, the students from Years 4, 5 and 6 participated in the Interschool Winter Carnival at HBF Arena. All students represented our school respectfully and responsibly, showing the community what wonderful sports people we are. At the end of the carnival Joondalup Primary had participated in three grand finals and won two events- Rugby and Netball B. We are proud of all their achievements. Thank you to Mr Lee for organising our teams and to all the teachers who trained them.

Talk For Writing in Room 30.
In Year 1, Room 30 we learn to write using the Talk For Writing or T4W approach. T4W has a strong emphasis on using oral language and learning texts to develop our writing skills. We have used a text about Superhero Learners to learn about description, Jack and the Beanstalk to learn about characters, Unicorns to learn how to write an information report and Mr Big to look at settings. Each unit follows a three stage process that can take up to five weeks to complete.
- Imitation – we are ‘hooked’ into the text with a fun activity and then orally learn to tell a story using storymaps, drama, construction and art. We learn skills to develop our writing with a lot of ‘short burst’ writing activities.
- Innovation – we have a lot of fun changing the original story and having a go at writing the new story.
- Independent – we innovate and write our own story based on the original story. We often make our stories into books and love sharing our stories with each other.
We enjoy storytelling and story writing.

Funding Pledge for Playgrounds
Joondalup Education Support Centre and Joondalup Primary School are the recipients of two funding pledges, from the Labor party from both Burns Beach and Joondalup.
Receiving a total of $130,000 the two schools will work together to build new playground facilities in the kindergarten playground of the campus.
Zebras
The students in Year Four worked with the contrast, one of principles of design. The contrasting element was with black and white.
Giraffe
The students in Year Four continued working with the principle of design, contrast, to create a giraffe. The focus principle of design was pattern. Simple patterns were used in the giraffe spots.
Pizza
The students in Pre-Primary listened to the story "The Little Red Hen Makes Pizza". Working with the focus on the elements of form, colour and texture they created a sculpture of pizza on a plate.
Landscape in Windy Weather
We have had some very strong winds on Mondays when the Year Three's attend Visual Arts. After viewing the artwork of Vincent van Gogh, "Landscape in Windy Weather", the students worked with charcoal to create a windy weather landscape. The focus was on movement, a principle of design.
Cushion Cover
The Year Six students created a cushion cover. This was a long term project involving many different elements. They drew the wildflower, hibbertia and cut out a paper stencil. The hibbertia was silk screened onto calico. The centres of the flowers were then embroidered in coloured cotton. Some students had great success with sewing a French knot, while others worked with small stitches to create their design. Fabric crayons were used to make leaf rubbings. The students then used the sewing machines to stitch the cushion cover up. An insect or spider was drawn and transferred onto the cushion cover using an iron on transfer.
Makuru
Makuru is the start of the first rains. The Year One students used wax crayons to draw rain, puddles and a rainbow. The colour spectrum was revised before drawing the rainbow. Using the wet on wet technique water colour paints were painted across the page to create a stormy sky. The students worked with the principle of design pattern to colour the umbrella. The collage was then completed by pasting on their pre-cut photo, umbrella and drawing in the umbrella handle.
Kaya Wanjoo
As this term in Sustainability throughout the campus comes to a close, we have begun to plant a new area with Bush Tucker and an orchard. It is near the existing vegetable garden. Come on over and take a look.
Our campus had an amazing Reconciliation Week. This was well attended by parents and caregivers and has been a wonderful opportunity to learn from our First Nation people how for 60,000 years they have lived sustainably, using only what is needed, respecting the environment and sharing their wonderful culture and knowledge.
After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15pm to 4pm to look after the garden. This term we tended to the garden and helped with the establishment of our new orchard. Look out for Term 3 invitation soon.
Please continue to bring in:

- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
I attended a fantastic professional learning day where Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities were delivered in hands on lessons for us to take back to school. Did you know these priorities are taught in many different learning areas such as Science, HASS and Maths? Our school was acknowledged for our progressive journey in these two areas.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Science/Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
