National Science Week
Last week was National Science Week, an annual celebration of science and technology. Mrs Phillips took 14 students from Year 4 - 6 to represent the school at Belridge Secondary College. The students worked on several projects linked to this year’s theme Species Survival – More than just sustainability. The Year 4 students created an animal habitat that would affect an animal’s change of survival, Year 5 made a bird feeder, and the Year 6s created a sustainable and inclusive zoo.
Congratulations to the following students who were selected to participate:
Year 4 Phoebe C, Rachael G, Byron S and Phoenix K
Year 5 Zoey P, Makynlee C, Ruth D, and Havana J
Year 6 Stanley H, Daniel T, Marley W, Charlie K, Flynn R and Erin A.
One Big Voice
Well done to our Choir students who have been rehearsing for their big performance at One Big Voice on Thursday 22 August. Mr Sutherland, Ms Read, Mrs Lindemann and Miss Todd are taking 60 students to perform as part of a massed choir at Perth Arena. I am sure that it will be a fantastic night.
At today’s assembly we had the opportunity to listen to the Choir sing some of the songs they will be performing. It is sounding fabulous.
Christmas Carols Night
It is hard to believe that we are talking about Christmas, but we are already planning for Christmas Carols. Please mark on your calendar Thursday 28 November 2024 for our twilight Carols Night. More details will be provided, closer to the event.
Children’s Book Week
This year’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic’ and magic always happens on dress up day. All students are invited to come to school tomorrow,Wednesday 21 August dressed as someone or something from a book. There will be a parade from 9:00 am in the undercover area. As always, the staff have been busy with their own creations.
Positive Behaviour in Schools
Did you know that there is a fortnightly morning tea for a student in every class who achieves the highest number of Class Dojos? Last Thursday 18 students enjoyed morning tea with Ms Selley, Mrs Reid and Mrs Perry. The menu varies but usually includes popcorn, a drink, fruit or vegetables and a muffin. Some students have been rewarded for more than one morning tea and there are always new faces. The students collect Dojos for showing kindness, respect, being responsible and doing their best.
So, staff do not miss out, there is a side competition going where staff can nominate a colleague who is demonstrating PBS during their day. Mrs Jackaman and Miss Mercer were our most recent winners.
Assembly news
The next assembly will be held on Tuesday 3 September and is being presented by Rooms 12 and 13. It will commence at 2:15 pm in the undercover area.
P&C Association news
There will be a P&C Association meeting on Wednesday 4 September 2024 from 7.00 pm in the staffroom.
Do not forget the annual P&C disco which is happening Friday 30 August 2024. It is free but you must register your children, so we know who is coming. More details are in the newsletter.
Faction Athletics
Term 3 is all about athletics. Mr Morrey is preparing all the students for Faction Carnival Week.
The key dates are:
- Monday 9 September – 200m, 400m and Tug of War (Year 3 – 6)
- Tuesday 10 September – Long Jump and Long Throw (Year 3 – 6)
- Friday 13 September – Faction Carnival (PP – 6)
More details regarding Faction Carnival Week will be sent home soon.
School Dress Code
Just a reminder that all students are required to wear a broad-brimmed or bucket school hat. Caps are not part of the dress code and do not provide enough sun protection.

Welcome to the latest update from our vibrant art room!
We are delighted to update you on the wonderful artistic journey our Year 3 and 4 students have embarked upon this term in Visual Arts. The students have been immersed in a creative process as part of the upcoming Little Impressions Exhibition at the 2024 AWESOME Festival.
This year's theme, "Listen to Your Heart," encouraged our young artists to explore their emotions and express themselves through art. They began by creating unique collage paper prints using techniques such as rainbow scrape printing, squeegee painting, and kiss printing. These methods allowed them to experiment with texture and colour, sparking their imagination and enthusiasm.
Following the printmaking phase, the students carefully cut their prints into strips to form the vibrant sun rays surrounding their self-portraits. This step encouraged them to think critically about composition and design. Currently, our students eagerly paint self-portraits, each a personal reflection of their inner selves. Through this process, they have honed their skills in self-expression and developed a deeper understanding of the power of art to convey emotions and experiences.
The 2024 AWESOME Festival, where our sun self-portraits will be proudly displayed, will take place from 24 September to 28 September. This event will provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to share their creativity and celebrate their accomplishments with the wider community.
Stay tuned for more updates on their artistic journey!

Belridge Secondary College Science Week Challenge 2024
As part of National Science Week 2024, Belridge Secondary College (BSC) invited schools within the Joondalup Learning Community (JLC) to compete in a JLC Science Week Challenge. The challenge was designed around the 2024 National Science Week theme of Species Survival: More than just sustainability.
The challenge had 3 categories for entry:
- Year 4 – to test whether camouflage impacts a species survival.
- Year 5 – to design a bird feeder to attract an endangered species.
- Year 6 – to design an inclusive and sustainable zoo.
The Year 4 students were taken through the scientific process and investigated how animals use specific behavioral adaptations, specifically camouflage, to protect themselves from predators and increase their chances of survival. The Year 5 students were taken through the STEM process and designed and built a bird feeder which would attract an endangered species, specifically the Black Cockatoo back into our backyard. The Year 6 students were taken through the STEM process and researched, designed and built a zoo that was both sustainable and inclusive.
The most creative and unique scientific/STEM groups from each year level were invited to present and pitch their designs to a group of ‘shark tank’ experts at BSC. The following students proudly represented Joondalup Primary School and presented their projects:
- Year 4: Phoenix K, Byron S, Rachael G, Phoebe C
- Year 5: Ruth D, Zoey P, Havana J, Makynlee C
- Year 6: Stanley H, Marley W, Daniel T, Charlie K, Erin, Flynn R
After presenting their designs and having the opportunity to explore the designs completed by other students in the JLC network, the winning design from each year level was chosen.
The following students were awarded medals and prizes:
Year 4
- 1st place: Rachael G, Phoebe C
- 3rd place: Phoenix K, Byron S
Year 5
- 1st place: Ruth D, Havana J, Zoey P, Makynlee C
Year 6
- 2nd place: Charlie K, Erin A, Flynn R
Not only did Joondalup Primary School place exceptionally well in the individual group categories, the school was awarded the coveted JLC science trophy for 2024, which means JPS are now back to back winners!
A very big thank you to all students who were invited to attend the excursion, each student upholding our school PBS values as they respectfully and responsibly represented the school, and shining bright when it comes to ‘we do our best’.
I would also like to acknowledge the commitment and flexibility of staff throughout this process. It has been a task heavy and time demanding challenge and Mr Cutler, Mrs D’Uva, Mrs Butler and Mr Brooke have been an integral part of helping to bring this all together.

Faction Carnival
All students have been training for the upcoming faction carnival. This year will see the introduction of the 400m and 200m race. These will be held on Monday 9 September along with Tug of War at Windemere Park. There will be two divisions in each year from Years 3 to 6, with 8 students competing in each race. Students have competed in time trials to qualify for this event.
Tuesday 10 September will be the Long Jump and Throw events. This will be for Years 3-6 students. The top 8 students will compete on the day. The students will get the opportunity to qualify during their Physical Education lessons.
The top 2 finishers in all of these events will qualify for the Interschool Athletics carnival, that will be hosted by East Wanneroo Primary School in Week 2 of term 4. Years 3 to 6 students will also get the opportunity to qualify for the Interschool team games in the upcoming weeks.

Taiko Incursion
On Wednesday 7 August, the school hosted an incursion by Taiko-On, a dynamic Japanese percussion ensemble. The name "Taiko-On" translates to “Sound of the Drum.”
The students participated in an interactive showcase where the Taiko-On group performed a variety of arrangements using Taiko drums of many forms and sizes, along with other percussion instruments and woodwind accompaniment. It was fantastic to see the students enthusiastically embracing the experience, immersing themselves in the vibrant energy of the performance. During the showcase, the students and teachers also had the opportunity to try out the instruments.
In addition to the showcase, the students from Years 3 to 6 had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop with the Taiko-On group. During this workshop, they not only learned about rhythm, technique, and teamwork but also gained insights into Japanese culture and the significance of Taiko drumming.
A huge thank you to our school’s P&C community who funded the incursion.
Music
In our Music classes, upper-year students have continued their GarageBand composition unit, focusing on different instruments each week. From creating drum loops to building chord progressions on guitars and crafting melodies on synthesisers and piano, it has been fantastic to hear the creativity students are bringing to their compositions.
Middle primary students have begun working on an ensemble piece using barred instruments such as glockenspiels, metallophones, and alto, bass, and mini marimbas. It’s always fantastic to see students challenge themselves during rehearsals as they refine their parts to work together as a cohesive musical ensemble.
Junior Primary students have been learning the keyboard, using it to explore musical concepts such as pitch direction and distinguishing between high and low sounds. They have also been familiarising themselves with the musical alphabet, learning simple melodies, and performing with their classmates. Additionally, they are refining their coordination and finger technique, which are crucial for proficient keyboard playing.
In Choir, the students have been diligently rehearsing for their assembly and The One Big Voice choir festival. They have been applying themselves with great focus, demonstrating commitment and enthusiasm. Their hard work is evident in their growing vocal skills and teamwork, preparing them well for these performances.
