Music with Mr Sutherland
It has been fantastic to see the students return in 2024 ready for a year of music-making. The Pre-Primary years have been introduced to musical elements such as tempo, pitch, dynamics, and duration through simple concepts such as long and short, high and low, fast and slow, and loud and soft within game-centred contexts involving movement, dance and song.
The Junior years have begun to investigate melodic patterns of sol and mi, experimenting with the melodic contour and pitch direction, and have been improvising rhythms within speech rhymes and songs.
The Middle Primary and Upper Primary students have been learning the major pentatonic scales through the use of Solfege and Cerwin hand signs. Additionally, they have been translating speech rhymes into performable rhythms through the use of body percussion and have been performing their arrangements in small group ensembles of up to three parts.
The first session for choir in 2024 has begun. It has been excellent to see many faces return for another year of choral practice. Additionally, it has been wonderful to welcome numerous new faces joining us for the first time.
I would also like to extend acknowledgment to our IMSS students who have commenced their lessons. Some are returning for their instrumental tuition from last year, while many are beginning their instrumental journey for the first time. We wish you all success in your instrumental pursuits.
