National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week

Last Friday 26 May was National Sorry Day, which was first recognised in 1998, one year after the ‘Bringing them Home’ report was tabled in Parliament.  National Sorry Day recognises and reflects upon the impact of the arrival of the first Europeans on First Nations people.  It also recognises those people in the Stolen Generation and the ongoing hurt that many First Nation families experienced when families were separated by the Government.

This week is National Reconciliation Week and classes will be building their knowledge and understanding of the ongoing journey to have strong relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous people.  We are making the most of this opportunity to understand what we can do to achieve reconciliation.  This year’s theme is “Be Brave, Make Change”.

Create a class window display depicting the colours of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander flags. There will also be additional information about National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week.

Winter sickness

With winter around the corner there are a considerable amount of  germs around. Please remember to keep your children at home should they be unwell and only return to school when they have no symptoms.

Staffing Update

A huge welcome back to Mrs Lahti who recommenced work last week following surgery. Mrs Lahti is on a return-to-work plan, building up her days to 4 days a week by Week 9. It was great to see how excited the students were on her first day back. I would like to thank Mrs Fraser, who stepped in seamlessly into the position, we really appreciate her commitment to our students and she will be missed.

Miss Hanrahan and Ms Strating are continuing their recovery, and we wish them all the best with this. The following will continue until the end of Term 2:

  • Mrs Reid will continue as Associate Principal.
  • Ms Segon will continue as class teacher in Room 6
  • Mrs Forbes and Mrs Sublet will continue to be the class teachers in Room 18

National Opinion Survey

The National School Opinion Survey is one way of finding out how you believe the school is doing to support your children in their learning and development. It is also your opportunity to give us some comments about what you think of the school and where you would like us to be in the future. Please click on the following link to complete the survey:

https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/t2PwdAAJ

Please complete the survey by 3:00 pm on Friday 16 June 2023.

Uniform Policy

Fostering school pride helps students to satisfy the need to belong. Being a part of something larger than yourself, a part of something that in some significant way defines you, will amplify your sense of self and afford your perspective, attachment and acceptance. Children don’t just go to a school, they go to a particular and specific school.

It takes little to see that a uniform gives children the perfect mechanism to display that sense of belonging and to be seen by others and their peers as the embodiment of our school’s values. In being the same for all they ask a school population to treat all equally.

It’s fantastic to see students wearing the full school uniform at Joondalup Primary school. We hope that this will continue into the cooler months too.

Pyjama Day – Thursday 1 June 2023

For the first day of winter, students can wear their pyjamas to school. We ask that students bring a gold coin donation, which will be donated to our sister school in Cambodia.

Please note, students must still wear closed in shoes, slippers, ugg boots etc.

Cyber Safety insert

With the previous Newsletter, I provided a document for parents that included 5 tips to keeping our children safe when they are online. This was from the following safety website - https://esafety.gov.au/parents.

This website provides valuable advice to parents on how to talk to our children about online safety. This also includes cartoon videos for younger children. Topics include cyberbullying, online gaming, unwanted online contact etc.

Throughout the year, classroom teachers will also deliver age-appropriate lessons on online safety.

School Development Day

Please remember that Friday 2 June is a School Development Day, so no children come to school.
