Ride to School and Harmony Day
It was a spectacle to see so many students and staff wearing orange, the colour for Harmony Week, and riding and scooting to school last Friday. Mr Whitehead and Mrs Perry did much of the organising with staff helping on the day, all of their work is appreciated. Photos from the day are later in this newsletter.
I would like to especially thank Woolworths Joondalup, for their generous donation of bananas, apples and water which the students really enjoyed.
Staff professional learning
Yesterday Jason Barrow, a local Noongar man, came to the school to work with the staff so that we learnt more about Aboriginal history and culture. As part of the schools’ Reconciliation Action Plan, we are committed to improving our own knowledge and understanding to strengthen the content and experiences what we give students.
The staff have also been focusing on Maths and we talked about our school NAPLAN results from 2022. We reviewed our lesson structure to ensure that we include very clear language about what we want the children to work on in a specific lesson. For example a statement for a lesson could be: ‘We are learning the words combining, sum and total means that we will do addition in a word problem.’ Mr Easther will be sharing our work with the Joondalup Learning Community next term.
Srang School fundraiser – This Friday
We are having a gold coin donation fundraiser this Friday 31 March for Srang School in Cambodia. Come to school dressed in Footy colours as it’s AFL Derby weekend! If AFL isn’t your preferred sport, wear your soccer kit, netball uniform or anything sporty.
Srang School is part of the Ankgor project where the aims are to;
- promote cooperation in education between the Department of Education in Western Australia and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport in Cambodia;
- build mutual capacity in the Cambodian and Western Australian education systems; and
- establish cultural awareness between Western Australia and Cambodia.
Money raised by Joondalup Schools is used to help provide clean water and toilets, teaching materials, and electricity for the school. Every dollar we raise makes a difference for Cambodian children and school staff.
