Year 5 and 6 Scitech Excursion

Scitech_6_1_.jpg

Last Wednesday, 17 August, the Year 5 and 6 students attended an excursion to Scitech as part of National Science Week. Here, the students were treated to a variety of science activities, which helped to consolidate their knowledge of all things science. Activities included the Hot vs Cold experiments in the Lab, the CSI Heist, Top Secret Investigation, free time in the exhibit area and finally, a show in the Planetarium, watching ‘We are Astronomers’. As teachers it was great to see such high levels of enthusiasm, participation, questioning and of course, excitement. Seeing the students connect on different levels, in a completely different environment, was truly gratifying. The classrooms were abuzz with lots of chatter once we returned to school. Some of the highlights from students included:

  • The best experience was the Planetarium because it actually felt like I was turning and twisting through space. – Jack - Room 12
  • My favourite part of going to Scitech was the Planetarium and watching ‘We are astronomers’. – Grace - Room 13
  • I loved Scitech because I love Science and I had never been there before. My favourite part was the free time because I got to explore and I loved the electric shock machine. – Max - Room 13
  • The best experience I had was the Hot vs Cold presentation and the movie in the Planetarium called ‘We are astronomers’. – Sofia - Room 12
  • The Planetarium was really cool and high tech. I really enjoyed it because it would’ve have taken a really long time to craft. The free play area was also really fun and I liked the dark area with the tubes. –Ben - Room 11
  • I really like the Hot vs Cold since it was exciting and the guy included people in his act. It was entertaining and also educational. I enjoyed how he made Science fun for everyone.

Thank you to all the students who were great ambassadors for Joondalup Primary School and to Mrs Phillips, who did all the arranging. A big thank you is also extended to all the parent helpers who assisted on the day as well as all the attending staff.
