National Science Week
Last week the students had a wonderful time celebrating National Science Week. Everything that happened was made possible because of the work of Mrs Nerelle Phillips, our Science teacher. The lab looked spectacular, children made castles at the light table, torches lit up the room and everyone enjoyed a special cup of ‘tea’. A very special thank you to Mrs Phillips for making creative, innovative and instructional activities that inspired us to think about glass and light.
Congratulations to the selected children who represented the school at the science competition at Belridge Secondary College. We came away with medals for our scientific thinking and creativity.
Visiting author and illustrator
Some of the Year 1, 2 and 3 children were able to spend an hour with Gabriel Evans, an author and illustrator of popular books including “Blue Flower” and creator of the special characters, Kingsley and Norton. It was interesting to hear about the writing and illustrating process, role of a publisher and just how many times you need to re-work your ideas until a book appears on the shelves. Gabriel talked the children through the steps to draw a dog dressed as a hotdog.
I would like to thank the City of Joondalup Library for providing the opportunity to the school.

Father’s Day Stall
The P&C Association are operating their annual Father’s Day stall next week. Children can go to the undercover area to buy something on Tuesday 30 August and Thursday 1 September from 8:00 am-8:45 am. Everything is $5.00.
Staff champion!
Mr Kyle Easther has returned to school as a champion! The WA Basketball 12s Team won the National School Sport competition. With Mr Easther as the team manager winning was never in doubt. Mr Easther’s direction and encouragement made a huge difference. Next stop, the Perth Wildcats!
Parent-teacher interviews
Thank you to all of the families who attended last week’s interviews. Feedback from staff has been very positive and they valued meeting with so many families in the afternoon. Of note, staff really enjoyed seeing those families that they would not usually see at pick up and drop off.
If you have any feedback, please send me an email to – carol.selley@education.wa.edu.au. The information will help the school know if there were things that you loved or want improved.
Book Week
It’s Book Week this week so that means books, dress up, and activities. Each lunch time children can do an activity based on one of the shortlisted books for the Children’s Book of the Year. Yesterday children made wishing stars which are being tied to the Kindy fence and others made blue flowers.
This Thursday morning at 9:15 am we are having our Book Week dress up parade. If you would like to see the students in their costumes, come and meet us on the oval. Staff have been working hard on their costumes and they sound fabulous. Please send your children to school dressed as a book character and if you need inspiration, check the internet as there are lots of simple ideas that can be created using things you have at home.
Faction Athletics Carnival
This event is only a week and a half away – Friday 2 September. You can purchase faction T-shirts and reversible hats from Uniform Concept in Joondalup.
