Principal's End of Term News

Selley, Carol.jpg
Dear families

Have a wonderful Easter break and school holidays.  I hope that you enjoy time with your family and friends and the Easter rabbit hops by with a few treats.

Remember to stay safe and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 19 April 2021.

Reflections

Sometimes children say “nothing happened at school”, which I can assure you is not actually true.

This phrase never features in staff conversation.  I see, hear and listen to countless conversations that reminds me that they are doing great things.

To capture this term’s work, here are a few highlights:

  • The Kindy children have settled into school and some attended their first whole school event at the Easter Hat parade.
  • The PP staff have worked through the On-Entry process, provided information for families, and are now reviewing the data to determine ‘what next’.
  • The Year 3-6 teachers have put their own learning about Sounds-Write into practise. Sounds-Write is now truly a whole school program in literacy.
  • The choir has been busy getting ready for the Anzac Day ceremony and planning is underway for ‘One Big Voice’.
  • Each newsletter, this one included, shows just what the children have been doing in Art. It is a busy place!

  • Some of the children learning Indonesian have been to the office to show how they are using simple animation to share spoken language.
  • Most teachers met with Nerelle Phillips to review the Science program to make the link between what happens in the lab and classrooms, stronger.
  • All teachers have established and consolidated collaborative teaching groups allowing them time to share ideas, resources, and solve problems.
  • We have participated in our on-line trial for NAPLAN. The trial allowed us to iron out technical glitches and for children to have another look at the types of questions in NAPLAN.
  • Connect is now in place across the school and teachers are sharing information through this platform.
  • K-Year 2 teachers are about to embark on a new literacy journey for writing – Watch this space!
  • Children competed at the Interschool Carnival.
  • Numerous clubs and supports are in place including Running Club, OSCAR, OSCAM, and Breakfast Club.
  • The whole school celebrated Harmony Day and Ride to School Day - What a fantastic event!

All of this is made possible because the staff at Joondalup Primary School accept a challenge; work together; pay attention to the detail; accept feedback; take responsibility for their own work, as well as look out for each other; and think about and do what is best for children.

I am very proud of all that has been achieved in Term 1.  I hope that all of the staff, regardless of role, take a moment to think about the list and know that they have played a part in making it possible.  I wish them a very happy holiday that includes some down time.

Easter Hat Parade and Raffle

There was a fantastic display of hats at the parade on Tuesday.  Lots of colour, shapes, sizes, detailing and creativity for all to see.  Thank you to all of the families who spent time making their masterpieces and sharing them with us.  A very special thank you to Miss Mercer and the School Captains who led the parade.

The school was overwhelmed with donations for the Easter Egg raffle and we were able to give away over 130 prizes to families.  It was an egg-traordinary effort and the generosity, fabulous.  Thank you also to everyone who purchased tickets.  The P&C Association did a wonderful job of organising this fundraiser for the school.

Interschool Athletics

Today the Interschool Athletics team did Day 2 of the competition between us and Currambine, Connolly and Beaumaris primary schools.

Congratulations to all of the children who were selected and participated in the events.  A huge effort was put in by all of the competitors.  A very special thank you to Mr Robert Lee, Phys Ed teacher, and Mrs Carol Perry, Associate Principal, for their organisation and to all of the staff who helped in the lead up to the event.

Munch Box

The good news is that the Munch Box (our school canteen) is back in action five days a week from the beginning of Term 2.

I would like to welcome Amy Daniels to the role of Canteen Manager.  A huge thank you to Sandra and Marlene for the amazing work of managing the canteen three days a week during Term 1. Thank you too to the many volunteers who fill the roster to help at key times during the day. I have acknowledged Carolyn many times before and despite having officially left the school and taken up a new job, she has lingered in the background to keep everything running.  The work of all of these people throughout the term means that the canteen is back!
