Measuring Mass
The Kindy students are measuring mass. They fill a range of different sized containers with a variety of different objects to identify whether the filled container feels heavy or light. To do this they use hefting techniques - holding objects in their hands to test how heavy. They are investigating the idea that not all ‘BIG’ things are heavy and not all ‘SMALL’ things are light. It is not only size but mass which determines how ‘heavy/light’ something feels.
Subitising
The Kindy students have also been learning to subitise. This means they are developing the skill to instantly recognise the number of objects in a small group without counting. They have been investigating this new concept through our minibeast theme. This includes playing games using dice and fundamental movement skill activities such as jumping onto pictures where they subitise the spots on ladybugs.
