Year 6 Camp
Once again, Year 6 Camp was a brilliant experience for the students with all of them returning with stories to tell. We received wonderful feedback from Dare Adventure Camps about our students’ preparedness to have a go even if the activity appeared daunting, the encouragement and kindness shown to each other, willingness to eat everything that was served for meals, and respect shown to camp and school staff. Camp would not have been possible without the work of Miss Skye Mercer, Mr Harry Cutler, Mrs Jayne Butler, Mrs Heidi D’Uva, Mr Rhys Sutherland and Miss Sanela Sivic. Each of them had a significant part to play to ensure that camp went ahead and was enjoyable. Thank you too to all of the families who made sure that their children had everything that they needed for the four days.
Indonesian success
Our school participated in the Side By Side Competition which was run by the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of WA. Ibu Mulyana submitted a recording of our students having a conversation in Indonesian. Congratulations to Grace G and Lydia E who came first in the Year 1-6 Competition. Well done to Ibu on the great success that she had with the students.
Colour Run
The Colour Run is fast approaching. It’s happening on Thursday 9 November 2023 and commences at 1:45 pm at the school.
Remember that all money raised goes to the P&C Association which in turn helps our students. Please go to the website to donate. Colour Run (mycause.com.au)
Currently the top three primary school classes are:
Mr Brooke – Year 4, Room 7
Ms Ireland – Pre-Primary, Room 31
Mrs Harding – Pre-Primary, Room 32
In case you are wondering what happens to the money, Joondalup Schools has used P&C money to help subsidise Year 6 Camp, purchase mini trampolines for Kindy, develop the Nature Play area, and to buy reading books, new equipment for the garden area, and construction, Lego, magnets and train and road sets for Pre-Primary. Every dollar matters and makes a difference.
Swimming lessons
Swimming lessons continue this week and next for the students in Years 3-5. In the last fortnight the PP-Year 2 students had their swimming lessons. Year 6 students need to wait a few more weeks before they have their lessons at the beach. The students are having a wonderful time at the pool and look forward to their lessons each day. The preparation for swimming lessons is extensive and I would like to thank Mrs Carol Perry and Ms Natalie Farina for their work behind the scenes.
World Teachers Day 2023
On Friday Australia celebrates World Teachers Day. It is a day when we recognise the valuable contribution that teachers make to schools. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the teachers at Joondalup Schools for their dedication and professionalism. Each day they work hard to ensure that every student engages in the learning program and works towards the goals set for them individually and as a class. There is no doubt that education continues to change, and the staff consciously work towards building their knowledge and skills to be the best they can be.
Right alongside our teachers are education assistants and support staff who equally contribute to making the school as successful as it is. Thank you to all of these people who add so much.
School Development Day
Please remember that Friday 10 November 2023 is a School Development Day so no children come to school. The staff will be participating in professional learning.

A Wild but Wonderful Camp!
At the dawn of Spring, the classrooms of 10 and 11 went to Dare Adventure Camp in Dwellingup to face a week full of fear, fun, excitement, and memories.
Day 1- Courageous Kayaking If you came up to me after kayaking and said it was challenging, I’d say that’s an understatement. Kayaking not only challenged our skill but also our lower body, my rib cage was on fire but thankfully our instructor let us dip in the water after.
Night-time could also be called quiz night as Mr Sutherland gave us 44 tricky questions to answer with all our brain power, but he added a twist to it by inviting Shrek and his family which prompted us to yell “Onions have layers!”
Day 2- Like Climbing Mount Everest
On the second day of our thrilling adventure, we took on the 10-metre rock climbing and abseiling wall. For the rock climbing it was like a race of who can get up there first but only a handful of people did it. I can’t forget the flying fox with it being new and improved with it being 100 meters and over water!
During dishes on night two it was a battle of who can see their reflections in the plates first, but that was quickly shut off because of the night walk. As we were in the bush there was little to no light pollution you could see the outskirts of the Milky Way and some shooting stars.
Day 3- Commando Course
Have you ever seen Australian Ninja Warrior? Well, the Commando Course was just like that but with a twist, a very muddy ending! While some people remained clean, the rest of us looked like Chewbacca! We were faced with tyres, walls, nets, and even a 12-foot wall at the end which only 3 people could complete.
With it being the last night at camp, we had the talent show with people dancing, singing, and stuffing their mouths with junk. They even brought a special guest to the talent show, ‘Gong’. Gong didn’t really like some of the acts and was sending them off within 30 seconds.
Day 4 – Ready, Set, Fire
First thing on Day 4 was Archery Tag where you got to shoot your friends. Obviously, they were safe arrows, but it was still harsh having your ‘friends’ shooting you in the head, but if you were in my group, you got your revenge winning all your games.
Exhausted, bruised, shot, grazed, muddy, cold, tired but happy and proud we boarded the bus to head home. This camp was something to look back at for the rest of our lives, it was full of memories and laughter, fun and excitement and I know for sure that I'm never going to forget it!
By: Levi – Room 10
Here are some more of our student's accounts of thier time at Dwellingup and lots of photos to enjoy.
My favourite activity was the commando course because there was a bunch of activities in one specific area, and I got to challenge myself like the 12-foot wall. I found abseiling challenging because when I was at the top, I could not trust myself to lean back and then walk backwards. The camp was fun because in free time I got to kick the footy with people I have not spent time with before.
Pippa – Room 10
I found the 12 ft wall to be challenging on the Commando course. I think they should lower it to 10 ft as I could only get halfway up! Everything was fun, especially archery tag as I got more than eight people out.
Caden – Room 11
The adrenaline of going up the stairs getting ready to go on the flying fox was fun and figuring out where to go and following the group on the mountain bike riding was good too. I think the rock wall was challenging as I’m not very good at it, but I did enjoy it. It was also hard to explore while using the compass in the orienteering activity.
Cameron – Room 11
The talent show was my highlight because it was fun watching everyone’s talent. The mountain biking was one of my favourite activities. Abseiling was the most challenging because I had to climb backwards and that made me nervous. It was awesome.
Sofia – Room 10
I found the night walk challenging as Mr Cutler freaked me out when he started meowing. It was also scary doing the abseiling activity, especially when you had to lean backwards as I didn’t know how stable it was. This was my first time doing this activity. I really enjoyed the mountain biking, which was heaps of fun.
Lydia – Room 11
I liked the abseiling wall because it got me out of my comfort zone. I thought the kayaking was pretty hard when me and Shan were turning, we wacked into the trees and we kept on running into the banks. The food was great, my favourite was the lasagne. Just hanging out with my friends was fun.
Aurora – Room 10
Last Term 4 students from Year 6 took part in the languages competition run by the Modern Language Teachers’ Association of WA. Pippa, Indiana, Lydia and Grace participated in the Side by Side competition. The video of the conversation that they recorded at school was sent to the judges via the MLTAWA website link. The 4 students of Joondalup Primary School had to compete with students who conversed in Mandarin, French, Italian, German, Indonesian and other languages.
The president of the MLTAWA, Mrs Marisa Schiavi announced the award winners of the competition on Thursday 25 October at Willeton Senior High School. The award ceremony was attended by a lot of teachers, students and parents.
Lydia and Grace won 1st place in the Year 6 category for Indonesian in the competition. Well done, Lydia and Grace. Thank you to Pippa and Indiana for participating in the competition.

Carols by Candlelight - Friday 1 December
In preparation for our annual Carols by Candlelight event scheduled for Friday 1 December, the students have commenced rehearsal sessions. Their commitment to learning both the vocal and choreography of their designated pieces is commendable. We look forward to presenting our annual Carols by Candlelight event, reflecting the festive spirit of the Australian summer season.
Introduction of the Ukulele Program for Upper Primary
Upper Primary students have embarked on our Ukulele Program. They are acquiring a fundamental understanding of varied rhythmic structures, particularly through strumming patterns. Additionally, they are delving into chord structures, gaining insight into the foundational elements of harmony. Proper form and technique are also emphasised to ensure the best possible sound quality. The ukulele, with its user-friendly size and distinct tonal quality, serves as an ideal introductory instrument.

There is a lot a speacial art projects happening this term, here is a snapshot of what is happening. First the Year 6 students are working well to improve their techniques this year, which is evident in their beautiful self-portraits. They will be on display for their Gradation.
The students have started developing their skills with art projects to celebrate the school's 30th Anniversary. They are creating interesting artworks looking at the concept of positive and negative space while exploring line, colour, shape and pattern. They are very excited to share their creativity with their families... Watch this space!
