Since the last newsletter there has been lots of activity in the school.
Year 5 Sleepover and Leadership Activities
The Year 5 teachers introduced a sleepover for the students as part of the leadership development program. The pictures tell the story! I would like to thank Mrs Heidi Cobbledick, Mr Kyle Easther, Mr Ben Brooke and Miss Skye Mercer for managing the sleepover. Thank you also to Miss Sanela Sivic and Mr Craig Morrey for their assistance during the evening and following morning.
Thank you to Matt Evans from Woolworths for the generous donation of sausages and for their ongoing support of the school.
Faction Athletics Carnival
The Faction Athletics Carnival was great! Red was triumphant and led throughout the day with the other factions battling it out for their final ladder placement. As always, we saw children try their very best to compete fairly and enjoy the opportunity to challenge their friends and classmates.
I would like to acknowledge the work of the faction captains who were a great help to staff.
The carnival would not have been possible with the efforts of Mr Craig Morrey, our Physical Education teacher. Behind such a smooth event are hours of work in teaching skills, keeping staff on track and planning for each minute. Everyone contributed through organising children, managing the start and finish of races and games, keeping track of the points, manning the first aid station, and setting up and pulling down tents and this is greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the canteen for keeping everyone fed on what is a super busy day.
National Science Week – Congratulations!
Some of our students represented the school at the JLC Primary Science Challenge and I am pleased to announce that WE WON! Congratulations to all of the students involved:
Year 4 Verety, Dita, Owen, Caderyn, Kevin and Joshua
Year 5 Stanley, Jasmine, Jayden and Koa
Year 6 Noella, Zoe, Jaidyn, Locrian, Cody and Tom
National Child Protection Week - Drawing Competition
Congratulations to Bianca and Sophia who won first and second prize in a drawing competition. It's National Child Protection Week and the Department of Communities asked some of our classes to draw a picture of their families. The key message for this important week is 'Every child in every community needs a fair go'. The girls were delighted with their prizes!
Interschool Basketball
Well done to all of the students who represented the school at the Slam Series Cup. Thank you to Mr Easther and Mr Morrey for the training they provided and being part of the day.
Swimming lessons in Term 4
Next term PP-Year 6 children will be participating in swimming lessons. This year there is no charge for swimming lessons as we are using grant money provided by the Australian Government. Government has provided the school with a one-off grant for mental health and wellbeing initiatives.
Permission notes have gone home to families and are due back by Wednesday 20 September.
Week 1 and 2 | Wednesday 11 October - Friday 20 October | Pre- Primary - Year 2 |
Week 3 and 4 | Monday 23 October to Wednesday 1 November | Year 3 - Year 5 |
Week 7 and 8 | Monday 20 November to Friday 1 December | Year 6 - Beach swimming |
Year 6 Camp
Next term Year 6 students will be off on their camp adventure to Dwellingup. Given the chatter amongst the students (and staff) it will be a great time to get away from school and challenge themselves to new activities. I can hear the stories now – “Did you see how high the flying fox is?” “The mud was the best bit.” “We got no sleep on the first night.” I hope that the campers have a wonderful time!
RU OK Day?
To acknowledge RU OK? Day everyone is asked to wear something yellow this Thursday. Find out more about RU OK? at www.ruok.org.au
Traffic Wardens
I have been made aware that there are ongoing concerns about the absence of a traffic warden on Candlewood Drive. The management of traffic wardens is not the responsibility of the school. I have written to WA Police expressing our concerns. I am pleased to report that our traffic warden has returned to Candlewood Drive.
WA Police is very short-staffed on traffic wardens and their relief pool is nearly non-existent. If you are interested in working as a traffic warden, please let me know and I will pass on your name and contact details.
P&C Association Generosity
I would like to thank the P&C Association for their generous donation of $1800 which Mr Sutherland is using to purchase Choir shirts for members to wear at events. We are going to look very smart.
Upcoming Sausage Sizzle
The P&C will be holding a sausage sizzle on Saturday 14 October when the school is used as polling booth for The Voice referendum. There are two shifts: 8:00 am -11:00 am and 11:00 am-2:00 pm. If you are available, please contact the school and your details will be forwarded to Jenny Coyle.

BookWeek - Wednesday 23 August
On Wednesday 23 August we celebrated Book Week with a dress up day at the school. The students dressed up in some fantastic costumes and enjoyed the activites in the afternoon.
Faction Carnival
Congratulations to all students who competed on the day. The sporting spirit displayed throughout the carnival was a highlight. There were some amazing races with tight finishes (that came down to a half a foot in front) to decide the winners. All students gave it their all in their races and team games, which was pleasing to see.
I just wanted to say thank you to all students for their efforts leading into the carnival throughout their physical education lessons.
Congratulations to Red, who narrowly defeated Gold, to be crowned the winners of the carnival.

Special Thanks for Faction Carnival
A special thanks to Matt Evans from Woolworths Joondalup, who kindly donated fruit for the kids to snack on throughout the day.
Camp Australia also donated their time to judge the team games. Thank you to these volunteers, who helped the day run smoothly.
Interschool Basketball (Slam Series Cup)
On Thursday 7 September, our school participated in the Basketball Slam Series Cup at HBF Arena. The day was a great experience with all students and staff enjoying themselves. The results did not go our way throughout the day, but we held our heads high and fought until the end. The experience for some of our year 5’s should bode well for next year!
Thank you to Mr Easther, who coached throughout the term and on the day.
Tabloid Day
Friday 15 September will see a sports tabloid day held for the upper primary school students (years 4-6). The students will compete with their factions in numerous sports and activities. Good luck to all!

Ensemble Performances in Upper and Middle Primary
In our music program, students have fully embraced ensemble performances. During these sessions, they transformed spoken rhymes into multi-layered musical compositions. At the base is a "Bordun," serving as the anchoring bass line. On top of this, they incorporate "Ostinati," which are short, repeating musical phrases that provide rhythmic and melodic continuity. Finally, they layer a melody over the ostinati and bordun, culminating in a rich, full musical arrangement.
As students progress through the grades, they perform increasingly complex musical tasks. By Year 6, they are capable of performing up to four concurrent musical parts, showcasing an advanced understanding of musical composition and coordination.
To make these ensemble pieces even more harmonious, we've physically removed bars from the instruments, thus configuring them to pentatonic scales. Pentatonic scales are made up of five notes that naturally sound good together, which allows for a more forgiving and harmonious playing environment. Upper Year levels have been further challenged with La minor pentatonic tone sets to explore the minor sound.
Of special note is our focus on improvisational techniques. Students have been divided into instrumental groups—metallophones, marimbas, and glockenspiels. Where each group takes turns performing two-bar solos, after which the class reunites to the central melody. This process supports improvisational skills whilst reinforcing the musical concept of form.
Junior Primary Activities
For our younger students in Junior Primary, the focus has been on fundamental musical elements such as pitch direction, maintaining a steady beat, and cooperative movement activities. These foundational skills have been reinforced using a new, unique resource: a stretchy elastic band handcrafted by Ruth Galt from Education Support called a cooperative band. The cooperative band serves as a helpful resource in supporting students coordinate movements and internalise musical concepts whilst working together as a group.
Thank you for your continued support of our music program.
Last week, the Year 5 students had the opportunity to participate in a sleep over at the school, in preparation for their leadership campaigns. The students spent Thursday night at school, sleeping in the classrooms (or did they sleep?). This allowed students to identify who amongst them attributed the best possible leadership qualities. The Year 5s also participated in several leadership games focused on communication, teamwork and problem solving. An emphasis was placed on leadership qualities to ensure the most informed decisions will be made in the upcoming leadership campaign in Term 4. The students all had a fantastic time and showed great leadership skills, the lack of sleep was definitely worth it.
Here are some things the students had to say about the event:
I really enjoyed the school sleepover. It was a great experience. It was really fun to spend time with friends and work with different people. The best thing was spotlight. I was able to connect with people I don’t usually talk to and have fun at the same time.
Jasmine
I really enjoyed the sleepover. We had delicious dinner and breakfast and played fun games. My favourite game was the mixed spotlight and cops and robbers game. Mr Brooke was nice enough to reward that game with prizes. Thank you teachers.
Daniel
The leadership sleepover was very fun. The activities were really fun and we got to work as a team with people we don’t normally talk to. The meals were really good. We got to watch a movie and have popcorn which was the best part. If anyone was talking or being silly, the teachers were really good and did something about it.
Erin
Students have been busy demonstrating confidence, curiosity, imagination and enjoyment when engaged in their visual arts projects. I love these Koalas! The Year ones drew these cute pastel Koala portraits using oil pastels, exploring different techniques to create texture. The year six’s have Clay Gnome waiting to dry. How magical do they look?
