Welcome back to the commencement of Term 2. I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome that I have received. Over the last couple of weeks, I have met with several parents, students, and staff, and spent time in the classrooms. What has really impressed me is the community environment that has been created here. I am also excited to see the evidence-based teaching practise in the classrooms. I’m looking forward to working with this school community throughout Term 2 on Joondalup Primary School’s improvement journey.
My door is always open. Please drop in if you would like to discuss anything.

Cross Country
Congratulations to all the students who competed in the Faction Cross Country event last week. I was informed that students demonstrated high levels of persistence and resilience to complete the tough race. A huge thank you to Mr Morrey for his excellent organisation of the event.
Connect – Semester 1 Student Reports
Connect is a learning, support and communications platform developed by the Department of Education WA for staff, students and parents in public schools. Check out the short video clip on Connect at https://vimeo.com/connectwa/welcome
We use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities and stories can be sent to you via email or via a push through notifications on your phone. You can access Connect through a web browser, where you will have access to a range of information. You can also download a free app called Connect Now, to receive push notifications.
Please let us know if you are not receiving notifications through Connect, or if you require help to log in. If you have not previously created an account on Connect, you would have received an email last week asking you to sign up. Please follow the link in the email to sign up.
Semester 1 Student Reports will be published on Connect at the end of this term. One advantage of publishing them on Connect is that they stay on your child’s profile. You will have access to them in future years if required.
Cyber Safety
The online world can be a tricky part of life for parents to navigate with their children. The Australian Government has created a range of resources to support families on the eSafety Commissioner site - https://esafety.gov.au/parents
I’ve attached an eSafety document to the Newsletter that outlines 5 tips to keeping our families safe when they are online. You can also use the eSafety site to research popular apps such as Roblox, Snapchat, Messenger Kids etc. The website provides us with information on how we can keep our children safe as they navigate the digital world. I’ll continue to include further information in future Newsletters.
P&C Mother’s Day Stall
The first day of the Mother’s Day stall was held this morning in the undercover area. If your child did not purchase a gift, the stall will also be held on Thursday 11 May between 8:00 am and 8:45 am. All gifts are $5.00. Thank you to our P&C for organising the stall.
Assembly
The next assembly is on Tuesday 16 May 2023 at 2:15 pm and is being presented by Rooms 7 and 8. It is inspired by poetry, and rehearsals are in full swing. This assembly will be another demonstration of the quality writing program that is taught throughout the school – Talk 4 Writing.
Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBS) Update
As previously communicated, we have begun our Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBS) journey. We are currently in the planning phase and an information book was sent out last term. You will have seen that we have four whole school behaviour expectations. These expectations are:
- We are Responsible
- We are Respectful
- We are Kind
- We do Our Best
The PBS Committee are currently developing a ‘Behaviour Matrix’ that outlines expected behaviours in everyday school situations. During a recent staff meeting, all staff provided additional input. The Behaviour Matrix will also be reviewed by our School Board in the next meeting, for further input. Research tells us that to improve behaviour, we must teach the expected behaviour in a range of contexts. Our Behaviour Matrix will provide guidance on what behaviour expectations are to be taught throughout our school.
The next phase of planning includes student incentives and rewards for when students display the behaviours within the four expectations outlined above. Further information will be shared when this is developed. PBS will be officially launched at Joondalup Primary School when all areas of the planning phase have been completed.
School Development Day
Please remember that Friday 2 June is a School Development Day so no children come to school.
Happy Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day to mums and grandmothers who love and nurture children. Enjoy being spoilt by your loved ones.

Netball WA
Towards the end of last term, I was able to have specialist coaches from Netball WA come to the school. This was possible through the sports grant money provided by the sporting schools initiative. Netball WA supplied coaches for Years 2-5. The students enjoyed themselves and the coaches commented on how much they enjoyed being at the school. I was impressed with the enthusiasm that the students showed throughout.

In Music, the students started the new term with a performance of their original compositions on the glockenspiel. During the previous term, the students began by creating 4-beat rhythm responses to a known song, then adding pitch and notating their compositions on staff notation. During the performance, each student played a 4-beat melody they had composed to complete the last two bars of a known song. The students were accompanied by their classmates, who sang the song.
The compositions were differentiated by year groups, with higher year levels working with more complex tone sets such as the pentatonic scale.
It was fantastic to see the students' hard work and dedication pay off. Composing music can be a challenging process, but they rose to the occasion and produced impressive results. The performance was a testament to the students' musical talents and dedication. Overall, it was a great start to the new term, and we are excited to see what other musical achievements the students will accomplish in the future.

Years 3,4, and 5 are starting to design and create artwork for the City of Joondalup’s 25th Anniversary Art competition.
It’s very exciting. The winning art piece will be displayed on the digital tower at Yagan Square, and the competition artwork will be displayed at the City of Joondalup libraries.
It’s going to be very challenging to choose only 6 entries.
Check the Year 4 pull printmaking backgrounds they created ready to paint their City of Joondalup journey with Aboriginal symbols, cannot wait to see how they turn out.
