Dear families
School Development Day
Last Friday’s School Development Day was very successful. Our education assistants and some office staff completed a full day of First Aid training and have returned to school knowing how to respond appropriately in a medical situation. We now have more staff who know how to patch up injuries, splint broken bones, and administer CPR.
Teachers spent the day reviewing some of the school’s 2021 NAPLAN data, looking for the gaps in student learning particularly in reading. It has become very evident that, across the school, one of the things our students need to do is to expand their vocabulary and know how to use different words in their writing and to understand less common words when reading. For example, walked might also be skipped, stumbled, ambled, wandered, marched, strolled.
I left Friday afternoon immensely proud of the work that the teachers did during the day. Their reflection and acknowledgement of things that need to improve, the advice they gave each other, and willingness to have more conversations about the ‘what’ and ‘how’ in our classrooms showed just how fortunate the Joondalup children are to have such professional teachers.
Staff news
This week we welcomed Mrs Dawn Toomey to Year 5, Room 12 as the class teacher for the remainder of the year. Mrs Young has stepped back into the associate principal role during Mrs Perry’s leave.
Mrs Heidi D’Uva has been away from school for five weeks and is now recovered enough to begin to return to work. She has been missed and it was so good to see her this morning. I know her students and colleagues are equally excited that she is back. I would like to thank Ms Tracey Grant for providing valuable support in Room 12 who has been our education assistant during Mrs D’Uva’s absence

Bugs, viruses and illness
As the school winds down and everyone gets a bit tired, there can be a resurgence of bugs, viruses and illness amongst staff and students. It is vital that sick children stay at home because there is no better place than in bed and being with a family member. So that the illnesses do not spread around the school, if your children have a headache, sore throat, temperature, or stomach bug then please make sure that you keep them at home.

Year 6 Camp - Student's accounts
On Tuesday 16 November our Year 6 students spent four days in Dwellingup on camp. Please take a look at some of the students accounts from their time there and enjoy the photos. It looks like they had a lot of fun!
On Friday 5 November the P&C hosted a Colour Run at Joondalup Schools. It was an amazing event raising funds for the schools and the students had a lot of fun. Take a look at some of our photos of the afternoon.
Joondalup, Ocean Reef, Beldon and Poseidon Primary students had a ball playing a round robin dodgeball tournament. The modified games were a big hit, consisting of 2x10mins halves where each school played a total of three games. Resulting in each student enduring approximately an hour of dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and dodging!
If you are lucky or skilled enough to have caught Joondalup in action, you know that we were great. The students would patiently focus on keeping their players in the game then strike when the time was right. However, the biggest defining feature of the Joondalup Primary School students was their ability to work efficiently and effectively as a team.
Much credit goes to the students who set their own goals, organised their own training sessions at lunch time and practiced in Physical Education classes. In the end Joondalup rolled into second place and grew further as a team. The excitement and enthusiasm towards this sport is a bigger victory than we could have asked for. Since the introduction of this sport, students throwing ability has rocketed!
Thank you to the parents that bowled us over with support. You lift us as a team and we bounce off your passionate cheering. Thank you Miss Mercer for your assistance on the day.
Well done to all the students involved. Your dedication and perseverance were nothing short of inspirational and you have always been fantastic role models for the school and sport.

This term the Year 5’s have been focusing on student leadership for 2022. Starting today all Year 5 students who wish to be a leader in 2022 will have the chance to speak about why they should be chosen before their peers vote.
During Choir, our Year 5 nominees had the chance to speak in front of the Choir members about why they should be chosen as a Choir Captain for 2022.
After lunch the Years 4, 5 and 6 children also listened to the speeches of those children wanting to be School Captains. Eighteen children nominated, from which six will be elected.
This Friday, each faction will be electing their two Faction Captains. These speeches will be pre-recorded and students will watch these presentations before making their final vote.
The announcement of next year’s student leaders will take place on Tuesday 7 December 2021 at 2.15pm, our usual assembly time.
I would like to thank all of the children for doing such an amazing job of their speeches.
