There are many people to thank.
Thank you to Mr Lee for all the work he put into the carnival. He has spent plenty of time making sure that things would go to plan.
Thank you to all of the staff for providing advice, being flexible with classes, helping with weekly training sessions, setting up and packing away equipment, and giving lots of encouragement throughout the day. A special thank you to the office staff for their work at the carnival.
Thank you to Mr Jack Tan, our gardener, for marking the oval for the day.
Thank you to Amy and the team in the canteen for managing the day’s catering. We enjoyed our recess and lunch.
Thank you to the many relief staff who stepped up on one of our busiest days; their efforts were appreciated.
Thank you to all of the families who were able to come along and support their children and factions.
Finally, and most importantly, thank you to all of the children who participated fairly, cheered loudly, and entered into the excitement of the carnival. We couldn’t have done with it without you!
Staff news
At the end of the week we will be saying a ‘temporary’ farewell to Mrs Shannon Read as she takes long service leave for Term 4. Mrs Read is going to enjoy some family time and take a few local holidays. Mrs Kristina Reid will be Room 20’s teacher.
Mrs Theresa Pryce has done a wonderful job in Pre-Primary, Room 32 and we thank her for her work. It has been a pleasure to have Mrs Pryce as part of our staff. Mrs Lisa Sneddon will be returning to school in Term 4.
Miss Natalie Hatton, Principal, Education Support Centre, will be taking leave from the beginning of Term 4 and then all of 2022. We will see her back in the principal’s chair for 2023. We wish Miss Hatton a wonderful break and hope that she enjoys doing some different things. Congratulations to Mrs Eason who has been selected to be the principal.
School improvements
Last week the staff were delighted to move into our new staffroom which was formerly the library. It is a lovely space where all staff can meet for events, meetings and lunch. Built into the staffroom are a number of small working spaces where therapists can work with children, staff can meet in smaller groups, and we can hold meetings, such as Board meetings.
Work to convert the former staffroom into the library will take place over this school holidays. It will be lovely to have a new library where children and staff can return to borrowing books regularly.
Year 6 School Captains
Today the school captains had the privilege of having lunch at Parliament House. Lunch was hosted by Emily Hamilton, MLA, Member for Joondalup, and we appreciate the invitation. Lunch at Parliament is a wonderful experience where children have the opportunity to tour Parliament and eat in the dining room with other parliamentarians. I am sure that the moment won’t be lost of the children. Thank you to Miss Hanrahan for going to lunch with the children. Our school captains were joined by school captains and leaders in Year 6 from ESC.
Golden Tickets
This Wednesday some very lucky children and their friends will be attending a movie afternoon at school. Children were awarded a Golden Ticket for showing respect, responsibility and safety. Over 200 tickets were given out and these children’s ticket was drawn out of the raffle box. The movie afternoon will incorporate all of the usual treats that come with a movie – popcorn, icecream and a fruit box.
Well done to the School Captains for their initiative to make this possible for the children and to Miss Mercer for providing some important oversight and organisation.
Today’s assembly
At today’s assembly the Year 1 children reminded us to get ‘Outdoor’ thanks to Jason Mraz’s song. Thank you to the families and visitors who came to the assembly. We continue to get a wonderful turn out of people to assemblies and it is always good to see you in the audience.
Congratulations to the honour certificate recipients. Here are some of the reasons why they were given to the children – improving behaviour, better decision making, dedication to learning, completing work on time, improving reading comprehension, being an engaging speaker, moving outside of her comfort zone to share insights with others, assisting others during group tasks, showing kindness and care, working hard on spelling and dictation tasks, mastering fractions, working to potential, and improving reading fluency.
There is an assembly Week 1, Term 4. On Tuesday 12 October 2021 at 2.15pm the Pre-Primary students will be presenting their assembly.

Happy holidays
Term 3 has been very busy with lots of wonderful activities for the children. I would like to thank families for their support of the school through their involvement in activities and for the positive feedback that has been provided to staff.
A huge thank you to all of the staff for the incredible work that they do day in and day out with the children and colleagues. Working in schools is a passion and all of them display this and a commitment to their classes and the broader school community. I would like to wish them a safe and happy holiday.

Growing the next generation of environmental champions
In early 2021, as part of its ongoing commitment to a greener future, Woolworths in partnership with Landcare Australia, opened a round of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.
The grants were open to primary schools and early learning centres across Australia, with the aim of inspiring kids with hands-on projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats.
Joondalup Primary School was a successful recipient of the grant. The aim of the Joondalup Primary School grant proposal was to revegetate the Nature Play Area by planting native flora which would attract local fauna back to the area and grow native flowering plants to attract bees and pollinators.
During science, the Nature Play Area became the major focus for the Year 4 students, particularly focusing on the way human and natural processes have changed the land over time. The final part of their study involved researching native flora that would suit to the soil type, with the end goal of revegetating the area and encouraging the return of local fauna.
Through the grant funding, sixty native plants (14cm to 30cm in growth height) 3 x 1.5 metre gum trees were purchased. The Year 4 students have been exceptional botanists, gardeners and labourers as they have worked tirelessly to plant, fertilise, water and stake the new natives. With ongoing care from the Year 4 group, students will be able to enjoy the benefits of their hard work over the next couple of years at JPS.
A big thank you goes to every Year 4 student who has passionately embraced this project from start to finish. Additionally, the support and proactive mindset from Mrs Butler, Ms Hunt and Mrs Cobbledick throughout the planting process has allowed the proposal to come to fruition.

Magpie/Koorlbardie
Earlier in the year the students in Rooms 18 and 19 sculptured a Magpie/Koorlbardie in flight from clay. Two pinch pots were made and joined together. The sphere was shaped into the body. A tail, beak, eyes and wings were then added. This term they glazed their artwork and it was fired.
Fish
The students in Year 1 created fish using clay. They rolled four different size pieces of clay into spheres and then flattened them. Texture was added to the clay using a variety of textured objects. The pieces were then joined together. An eye and mouth were added. Once fired the students selected coloured underglazes to paint the fish in. A clear glaze was painted over the top to seal in the colour.
Splat the Cat
During Book Week the Year 1 students enjoyed listening to the story of "Splat the Cat" by Rob Scotton.
The students worked with the elements of shape and texture to paint Splat in black acrylic. The eyes nose and inner ears were cut out and pasted on. Finally, the belly was painted with pink acrylic.
Moving Figures
Faction Carnival Week is always exciting. The students in Room 8 used a stick as part of the stick man's body and tried to capture movement. The backgound was painted in acrylic in their faction colour.

Wanjoo to Spring. The Noongar season is Djillba. A transitional time of the year, Djilba has days that are very cold, some that are rainy and windy and others where the sun comes through. As the days start to warm up, you’ll hear and see the first of the new born animals with their parents providing them with food, shelter and protection from other animals and people. The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping behaviour of the Koolbardi (magpie), Djidi Djidi (Willywag tails) and the Chuck-a-luck (wattle birds).
This is the start of the massive flowering explosion in the South West. It begins with yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. You’ll also notice cream and striking blue coloured flowers. As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, you will see the flower stalks of the Balgas (Grass Trees) emerging in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.
Traditionally, the main food source at this time of the year included many of the land based grazing animals including Yongar (kangaroo), Waiitj (Emu) and the Koomal (possum).
After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15pm to 4pm to look after the garden. Our seedlings and seeds have popped their heads up and are growing vigorously. We should have a wonderful harvest in Term 4. Our worms are busy breaking down food and producing worm whiz for our vegetables. The compost heaps have nearly turned into soil thanks to the many micro-organisms and healthy bacteria doing their ‘jobs’. A big thank you to all the students, parents and staff who turn up each week to nurture, learn and share a love of sustainable gardening. Week 9 was the final week for the term and we celebrated our community togetherness with an afternoon tea.
Term 4 invite will go out in the first week, with spaces limited to 20 students.
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY and EMPTY). You can bag the grounds up and sent to school as well.
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- Plastic lids from bottles (wash and remove inner seal)
- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
Containers for Change bottles/cans (clean and lids removed). Place on the large blue recycling bin near the Administration Office.
Please note ring pulls now need to stay on cans and placed in the large blue bin
Students from the upper years ESC and the After School Garden Club have begun to plan, draw and execute a mural using bottle tops collected from the community. This mural will carry an important message about keeping plastic out of our oceans. It has been a student led area of concern, with several very talented staff members contributing. It will also highlight just how many bottle tops we use as a society, with most of them going to landfill. We’ll keep you posted as we are photographing our journey.
Finally, take a look around the perimeter of the Nature Play area. Nerelle Phillips and her dedicated band of botanists have begun to revegetate this area with local native species of plants. The ESC has helped to place a temporary paving border around this area. If you venture up there please be mindful that students need to keep out of this bordered area to give our plants a chance to establish. As we become more sustainably aware of our ‘backyard’ the schools will begin to work collaboratively on some joint projects to encourage biodiversity.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Science/Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
