Telethon Kids Institute
Over the last two weeks some of our classes have had the opportunity to visit the Telethon Kids Institute at Perth Children’s Hospital. The excursions aim to show students a glimpse into the workings of a scientific lab and how important STEM learning is to medical research. Thank you to Mrs Phillips for organising the excursions and all our wonderful Teachers, Education Assistants and Parents who helped make these excursions possible.
School Disco
The school Disco is tonight. I hope everyone has purchased their tickets, picked out their dancing clothes and polished their dancing shoes ready to have some fun bopping to the tunes of DJ Matt.
Junior Disco 5:30pm-7pm Senior Disco 7:30pm-9pm
Mindful May
This May classes have participated in a Mindful May challenge as part of the Mentally Healthy Schools Program. Classes have been encouraged to record the days they have completed a Mindful activity such as colouring in, reading, listening to music or going for a walk. These activities were recorded on a calendar and Room 18 was our winning Mindful May class. They received a story book, colouring in sheets, pens, sticky animals and some activity dice as a prize. Well done Room 18, but remember, we are all winners when we take a moment to be mindful.
Wet Weather
A reminder as the weather turns colder to label your child’s jumpers and jackets so that they can be easily returned if lost.
Cross Walk Wardens
The school is in talks with the Traffic Warden State Management Unit. Fortunately, they have advised that they are able to provide a Traffic Warden for the crossing located on Candlewood Boulevard near Jolstra Crescent from the 14th June, however they are experiencing a shortage of people willing to undertake a Traffic Warden role. If you know of anyone who has a few hours each morning and afternoon and would be willing to train to become a School Traffic Warden please have them ring 6274 8731 for more information.
Winter Carnival-Friday 18th June
Good luck to all students participating in next Friday's Winter Carnival. Permission notes need to be returned by Tuesday 15th June. Have fun and enjoy the day.
Connect
Connect is our School’s preferred method of communication between parents and teachers. Please make it a habit to see what your child’s teacher is posting about your child’s class, as you may miss important information.
As the school furthers its use of Connect as a communication platform, it is very important that families know how to access posts. Attached is a quick guide for parents to use as reference if you are unsure of how to use the site.
Contact the school if you can’t remember your P number and password as we are happy to help.
Our carpark upgrade has started! Our play equipment has been dismantled and will be rebuilt on the other side of the basketball courts. The new carpark will have 15 additional car bays and 1 additional ACROD bay. This will reduce the pressure on street parking, keeping these free during the day.
The upgrade to the carpark will start on Saturday 12 June and will affect parking bays as indicated in the image below and there will be no access through Gate 2. Access will still be available through Gate 3, adjacent to the children’s crossing on Candlewood Boulevard.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Telethon Kids Discover Centre Excursion
The aim of Science at Joondalup Primary School is to cultivate and pass on a sense of wonderment and scientific curiosity by engaging students in a variety of hands-on investigations that explore all the fields of science. To further build upon the teaching and learning program, external providers are sought in order to provide students with an opportunity to apply their scientific knowledge and skills in real life science and STEM experiences beyond the classroom.
The Telethon Kids Discovery Centre, located on the ground floor of Perth’s Children’s Hospital have developed a new educational program where schools can visit the Discovery Centre and engage in an interactive medical space, partake in a talk and guided tour of a working laboratory with a Brain Cancer Researcher and finish with their own medical science experiment.
Joondalup PS students in Year 6, Year 4 and Year 3 have been lucky enough to be involved in this new initiative and have walked away from the excursion richer in knowledge, skills and intrinsic motivation to become scientists of the future.
The two-hour program started with a fun, interactive space full of games designed to get students involved in thinking and problem solving about science, health and research. Students were involved in interactive games that enabled them to work as a team to eliminate allergens from the lungs of an asthmatic, place major organs into the human body and use an x-ray device to observe the function of each, take a microscopic look at poo and the importance of handwashing after using the toilet, as well as using pipettes to create antibodies to fight off viruses.
The interactive experience was followed by a visit to a state of the art working laboratory where a medical researcher took students on a guided tour. She introduced and explained the practices of the working technicians, safety practices and the reasons underlying the need for strict safety when dealing with human body cells and medical research. Students asked a lot of relevant questions, showcasing the knowledge and skills they have acquired through learning experiences at school.
Lastly, it was time to put their scientific skills into practice. Students were involved in a medical DNA extraction using strawberries. Successfully each student adhered to safety practices and followed the intricate steps necessary to extract DNA from a strawberry…an amazingly engaging experience and an excursion that has planted the seed of medical growth amongst a few students at Joondalup PS.

Floral Landscape
The Year 1 students worked with the elements of colour, line and value to create these stunning floral landscapes. They worked like Monet creating an impression of a field of flowers.
The students began by painting a bright yellow sun on the page using circular motions with a large paint brush. White was added to create a lighter value and circled around the sun. More and more white was added as the circles around the sun got bigger and bigger, until the whole page was filled. Once the acrylic paint was dry, the lines representing the stems and leaves were printed on using the edge of a piece of cardboard. The flowers were then added in violet paint using circular motions. The complimentary colours, yellow and violet, create a vibrant piece of art.
Bottles
The students in Year 4 traced around bottles to create a composition. Using a cool colour they worked with the element of value to paint them in acrylic.
They started with the base colour and then kept adding white to create the different tints. Silver paint markers were used to trace around the shapes.
Fish
The Year 2 students previously created cats and now they have printed fish. The fish were draw onto foam trays and etched in. After a little help with cutting the fish out the students painted the printing blocks with white paint and printed a school of fish. One coloured fish was added for interest. This piece of work focused on the principles of design, pattern, contrast and emphasis.
Landscape
The element of Space was the focus for this piece of artwork. The students in Year 3 worked with techniques to create space on the page. They are size, colour, overlapping, higher up the page and detail.
