From the Associate Principal's Desk
Hello everyone,
The last two weeks at Joondalup Primary have been busy and full of exciting opportunities. I would like to thank all our staff for going the extra mile for our students. Many of our classes have experienced: NAPLAN, Interschool Cross Country, Reconciliation Week, Winter Carnival practise, Year 4 assembly, Year 5 and 6 Gold Incursion and a Year 5 Parliament House excursion. Looking ahead to the next two weeks they also promise to be busy. I hope you enjoy reading all about our school.
Mrs Young
NAPLAN
Over the last two weeks all the students in Year 3 and 5 completed their NAPLAN testing. It was a huge undertaking and each student worked hard to complete the tests. Well done everyone. The Year 5 students have written some Cinquain poems about the tests for you to enjoy.
Cross Country
Last Friday, 21st May, I had the privilege of watching our athletes compete in the Invitational Interschool Cross Country at Gumblossom Reserve, Quinns Rocks. Our team of 30 students from Year’s 4, 5 and 6 have been training hard all semester under the guidance of Mrs Egan and Mr Lee and all their hard work was well noted on the day. Ms Hunt, Mrs Egan, Mr Lee and I were all very proud of the achievements of each of our runners not only on the field but with their sportsmanship of cheering ALL the runners in each event. At the end of the day Joondalup Primary Schools overall ranking was fifth place. Congratulations to each of our athletes, you are all exceptional. A special mention to Zenophy, for coming second place in the Year 5 Girls race. Thank you to Mr Lee, Mrs Egan and Ms Hunt for their hard work on the day.
Parliament House
This week the Year 5 students in Room’s 12 and 13 had the opportunity to visit Parliament House, The Constitution Centre and The Electoral Education Centre in Perth, to learn about our countries Democratic values. The students were able to explore the Parliament chambers and participate in an activity called ‘Voting with Your Feet’ where students learned about voting during a division in Parliament. They also participated in a mock voting process at the Electoral Centre filling in ballot papers to choose their favourite item. This excursion was very educational for all and was a great way to finish off their learning in Civics and Citizenship. Thank you to all the Year Five teachers for creating this opportunity for our students.
Mindful May
During the month of May classes have been recording their mindful activities as part of a Mindful May competition hosted by Mentally Healthy Schools. At the end of the month they will all go into a draw to win a class prize, however we are all winners by taking a moment in our days to nurture our mental health.
Free Dress Day
The Year 6 assembly will be held on Tuesday 15th June. It will be an 80’s rock themed assembly and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their best 80’s rock outfit, complete with denim, black t-shirts and bandanas. There will be a gold coin donation requested for this day, with all funds being raised to go towards Srang School in Cambodia.
Safety around the School
There are a number of key concerns where adult behaviour is impacting on the safety of our students and other adults.
- Follow the parking rules around the school. It is not safe to stop in the middle of a road or double park along Jolstra Crescent. Please observe the parking rules at all times.
- The carpark at the front of the school is for STAFF and SCHOOL BUSES. It is not a thoroughfare or overflow parking for parents. Please do not park in this carpark.
- Currently we do not have traffic wardens at each of the key road crossings so children may need to cross the road without an adult. Remember to drive at 40 km/h between 7.30am-9.00am and 2.30pm-4.00pm. Remember that children are unpredictable and can’t judge the speed of the traffic.
Connect
Connect is our School’s preferred method of communication between parents and teachers. Please make it a habit to see what your child’s teacher is posting about your child’s class, as you may miss important information.
As the school furthers its use of Connect as a communication platform, it is very important that families know how to access posts. Attached is a quick guide for parents to use as reference if you are unsure of how to use the site.
Contact the school if you can’t remember your P number and password as we are happy to help.
P&C Meeting
Our P&C do an awesome job at raising funds for our school. They would love to see as many people as possible at the next meeting on Wednesday 2nd June. Meetings are held in the library and start at 7pm.
Public Holiday
Don’t forget our next public holiday is Monday 7th June which is WA day. This is an opportunity to enjoy a day off and head out to explore our wonderful state and maybe join in some celebrations around the city.
Wet Weather
As our seasons change into Winter this is just a reminder to have all jackets clearly labelled with your child’s name and room number so that they can easily be returned and nobody gets cold. Also remember, if your child is not feeling well please keep them home to allow them to recover and return to school as soon as possible.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Reconciliation Week
On Thursday 27th May our Schools acknowledged the start of Reconciliation week. National Reconciliation Week is held annually from 27th May - 3rd June. Reconciliation is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
As a campus, we launched Reconciliation Week with an assembly followed by various activities concluding with a picnic lunch. We all had a chance to taste kangaroo sausages, have our face painted and read about some influential Indigenous people while listening to songs from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australian singers.
It was wonderful to see the whole school community coming together to experience some of the history and culture of our Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders peoples.
Thank you to Bev Shaw, Mrs Hore, Mrs Read, Mrs Bennett, Mrs Young and all our other wonderful helpers for making this such a successful event.
Year Three National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 19th May, the Year Three classes took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. This event happens annually and each year a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools and many other places around the country. The book chosen for this year was ‘Give Me Some Space’, written and illustrated by Phillip Bunting, and read by astrophysicist, Dr Shannon Walker, from the International Space Station! All the Year Three students gathered to watch the story being read and afterwards had a group discussion about the book.
After the book reading, the students took part in making their own ice-cream, as every astronaut still loves to eat ice-cream, even in Space!! This tied in well with the Chemical Science unit they are doing in the classroom and Science lab. The activity was a great way to get our budding scientists involved in learning first-hand how materials, such as salt, can change the properties of a liquid and lower the freezing and melting points of a material. Students were able to choose if they wanted to make vanilla, chocolate or peppermint ice-cream. All ingredients were put into a zip-lock bag, followed by another bag with ice and salt and then finally, students shook the bag until the liquid turned to ice-cream. Most students enjoyed the delicious treat that followed, however some were left with rather salty ice-cream. In the end, much fun was enjoyed by all.
Gold Fever Strikes JPS!
The Gold Industry Group have developed a new initiative offering schools the opportunity to learn all about gold, its value, relevance and the myriad of career pathways within the industry. Kristen Potter, a gold industry facilitator delivered an interactive gold session to the Year 4 and Year 5 students on Wednesday 19th May 2021.
The hour interactive session involved a variety of STEM activities which focused on designing a pulley system to transport gold, replicating machinery often used in gold mining. Students discussed the science behind using a pulley system, then embraced their engineering skills and experimented using a single and dual pulley system to find out which design would reduce the load (energy used) of the gold that they were mining. Gold fever was buzzing as students used their critical thinking skills to build and reflect upon the success of their pulley systems.
With the buzz of gold fever in the classroom, the students questioned where they could find their own piece of gold. Apart from the 1 percent of gold that that could be found in mobile phones (trust me there was discussion about breaking phones for the gold), the Gold Industry Group have a free Heart of Gold app available to download. The app provides a range of interactive activities that students, families and friends can use from any location to discover gold in our backyard.
A very big thank you to Kristen Potter for sharing her time, knowledge and experiences within the gold industry…we now have a few students who have their sights set on gold mining in the future!

Colour Wheel Trees
The students in Year 5 revised the colour wheel. A tree trunk and branches were drawn and coloured in felt pen. The foliage was added in acrylic paint. The primary colours were painted first and then used to mix the secondary colours.
Cats
The Year 2 students listened to the story of "Cat and Fish go to see" by Joan Grant while viewing the great artwork by illustrator Neil Curtis. The illustrator has used the principle of contrast, with black and white pictures throughout the book. The students created their own collage cats in newspaper and felt pen.
Collage
The students in Room 31 worked with the element of shape to create a picture. After all the shapes were pasted on, they selected from a wide variety of materials to add to their work. It was then given a title.
Emotion
The students in Years 3 & 5 explored the element of line and emotion. They drew a face to show emotion and added crazy hair with ink.
Abstract
The Pre-Primary students created a colour wheel in acrylic paint. The primary colours were painted first and then used to mix the secondary colours. They then worked with the element of line to create an abstract.

This term in Sustainability the campus is continuing to learn more about sustainable practices within the school. Many classes are now becoming leaders in their area of responsibility.
Our campus is coming together for a week of activities for Reconciliation Week. This has been a wonderful opportunity to learn from our First Nation people how for 60 000 years they have lived sustainably, using only what is needed, respecting the environment and sharing their wonderful culture and knowledge. The journey we take it together.
After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15pm to 4pm to look after the garden. This term we have begun to harvest our vegetables and cook with them. The students made a very yummy pizza to celebrate their hard work.
Big news is coming regarding our Recycling programs, so stay tuned!
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY and EMPTY). You can bag the grounds up and send to school as well.
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- Plastic lids from bottles (wash and remove inner seal)
- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
We have continued partnerships with WasteWise, WaterWise, SunSmart, Clean Up Australia, Bunnings Joondalup, Woolworths, The Worm Shed, Tucker Bush and Sustainable Schools WA amongst a few.
