International Women’s Day
Last Monday the staff celebrated International Women’s Day with a delicious breakfast. It was a great opportunity for the staff to acknowledge the work of the women within the school and the broader community.
Neurodiversity Day
Next Monday, 15 March Joondalup Schools will be celebrating Neurodiversity Day. Neurodiversity Day celebrates that it takes all kinds of different minds, and celebrates these differences. Staff and students are encouraged to wear as many colours as they can on Monday in recognition of this day.
There are lots of famous people who think differently.
- Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame and Cara Delevinge have dyspraxia.
- Justin Timberlake and Emma Watson have ADD.
- Muhammad Ali and Sir Richard Branson have Dyslexia.
- Lewis Carroll, who wrote “Alice in Wonderland” was autistic.
Harmony/Ride to School Day
Next Friday 19 March we are celebrating both Harmony Week and Ride to School Day. Students and staff are encouraged to walk, ride or scooter to school, while wearing orange as this is the colour representing Harmony Week. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Cycling or walking are simple ways for children to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives. Children and young people need to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Research shows that children who ride or walk to school are more likely to arrive at school alert and ready to learn. We have created meeting points where families and students can meet teachers before school to ride/walk/scooter to school together. We also have a course set up around the school for all students to participate in during the school day. See attached information.
Connect
Thank you to everyone who has accessed Connect. I strongly encourage you to have a go at using it and persevere. I understand that it is a bit clunky and doesn’t appear to be family friendly. Trust me, it gets better. When the staff first used it, there was some reluctance and now, we use it every week to find staff news. Please make sure that you check the Library tab as this is where staff place important documents. The Connect app allows you to see the notices but you do need to use the website with the browser to find some information.
If you believe that you would like Connect access and did not receive a P number, please contact the school as we can fix this. Most families like having one P number so that anyone can see the information.
Third Party Approval
As previously written in a newsletter, parent permission is required for the students to use specific types of apps and access websites whilst at schools. These websites and apps require logins where student information is stored outside of the Department. Please click on the link below to complete the form online.
This MUST be completed by Friday 19 March and you will need to complete a form for each child.

The cycle of life continues, thanks to JPS students!
A Biologist is a scientist who studies life, specifically organisms and their relationship to their environment. Biologists study humans, animals, plants and bacteria to gain a better understanding of how the body and nature works, and how external factors may influence each organism.
Term One, has seen students at JPS embrace the role of being a Biologist. The Year Two students have explored their own life cycle before comparing it to that of Jack and the Beanstalk. The Year Three students have become Taxonomists, collecting animals in the Nature Play Area and using a scientific key to classify them. The Year 4 students have become parents and successfully germinated a bean seed so that it could complete a full life cycle. The Year 5 students have been deconstructing plants and animals to look at the adaptations that allow them to survive. Lastly, the Year 6 students have been exploring the world of micro biology and the amazing micro-organisms that can be viewed using a microscope.
Biology is a very relatable subject for students as it is all about life and living, something they do naturally on a daily basis whilst they observe and engage with things through play. I know that this is such a relatable subject for JPS students, as I have had students bring ‘fossils’ to me, bones from the Nature Play Area, mouldy bread from home, protozoa from dirty ponds and a variety of dead insects that they want to view under the microscopes.

Sail Boats
The Pre-Primary students worked with the elements of line, shape and colour to create sail boats on a wavy ocean. The collages are very bright and cheerful.
In Visual Arts we have been looking at some of the animals native to the Joondalup area.
Brushtail Possum/Koomoorl/Goormoorl/Goomal
The students in Room 30 did contour drawings of a brushtail possum/Koomoorl/Goormoorl/Gooma. They used watercolour pencils to add colour. A background was created with mixed media. First the students did wax crayon rubbings of gum leaves and then added a dye wash. A tree was painted in acrylic using cardboard. Finally, after the possum/Koomoorl/Goormoorl/Gooma was cut out, it was pasted on the background. The cutting out was very tricky, even for the adult who helped out with this!
Magpies/Koorlbardie
Magpies/Koorlbardie were drawn by the students in Rooms 18, 19 & 20. They were coloured with felt pen and cut out. The cutting out was mostly done for the students. A background was created with mixed media. First the students did wax crayon rubbings of gum leaves and then added a dye wash. A tree was painted in acrylic using cardboard. Finally, the magpies/koorlbardie were pasted on.
Western Grey Kangaroo/Yonga
The year six students drew a kangaroo/yonga and then worked with the element of tone to shade it in pencil. A background was created by using gum leaves as a stencil and spraying paint or dye over the top. The kangaroo/yonga was pasted on and tracks added. The students worked with one of the principles of design and movement. The tracks create movement around or across the page.
Neurodiversity Celebration Day
Monday 15 March
Dress in Rainbow Colours
Our School Captains saw that the school was celebrating Neurodiverity Day on our school calendar. Students were unaware what Neurodiversity meant so took it upon themselves to do some research. They found this information and have now shared it with all students on our campus. We would like to share their great research with our school community. Great work!
