Faction Carnival Week
Next week is Faction Carnival Week, there will be jumps, throws and tug-a-war during the week culminating with the Carnival on Friday 22nd March. The program is in the newsletter. Please ensure that your child has a Faction T-Shirt, a hat and water bottle. Come along and cheer for your child throughout the week. This year we are trialling NOT to have an official recess break. This means the students will stay at Windermere Oval. Students will need to have a snack in a disposable bag, clearly labelled, which they will need to carry over with them. The program of events and further information are provided in the link below.
Open Night
Once again, the Open Night was a great success. The feedback from the parents to classroom teachers was very positive. I had numerous parents approach me to say that their child has had a very positive start to the year. I would like to thank all parents, relatives and children for attending the evening. The funds raised from the sausage sizzle will go towards purchasing choir boxes. Every parent that visited their child’s room received a free raffle ticket. The prizes were two $25 canteen vouchers. Congratulations to the raffle winners, Agok from Room 12 and Luke from Room 7.
It's NOT ok to be away. Every school day counts!
To get the most out of education, children need to go to school every day. School attendance has a major influence on educational outcomes. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better results at school and are more likely to complete their schooling. Parents can encourage their child to attend school by having a positive attitude to learning and education. Poor school attendance patterns can start as early as Kindy. It is important that from the first day of school parents set an expectation that their children will be at school every day. Missing an average of ten days of school a term adds up to missing two full years of schooling by the end of Year 10. The school is targeting students who have an attendance rate below 85% and students arriving late to school (late is arriving after 8.50am). If your child arrives late 5 or more times in a term, you will receive a letter from me. The doors are open from 8.35am so that your child can get organised for the day.
Code of Conduct
Our Behaviour Management Guidelines work very successfully and the vast majority of students are very well behaved and follow the three school rules. Just a reminder that our three school rules are very simple to follow, they are:
- Be safe
- Be respectful
- Be responsible
Student Update Forms
Last week Student Update Forms were sent out to every student in the school to ensure that all records are up to date and correct. Please have these forms back to the office with any corrections by Monday 18th March.
Joondalup Primary School Board

The following staff, parents and community members make up our Board: Ashley (Chair), Miss Hanrahan (Principal), Mrs Perry (Associate Principal), Ms Farina (MCS), Mrs Young (Year 2/3 Classroom Teacher), Miss Mercer (Year 5/6 Classroom Teacher), Mrs Read (Year 1 Classroom Teacher), Miss Goodridge (Year 1 Classroom Teacher), Hannah (parent), Stephanie (parent), Laila (parent), Lynne (parent), Liz (parent), Luke (parent). Our two community members are Debbie and Kerry. Key topics covered included the 2019 School Budget, finances and 2019 School Operational Plan. The Board plays a critical role in the governance of the school as well as providing input into planning the future directions.
Joondalup Kid Award
Congratulations to Amelia from Room 13 on receiving my Joondalup Kid Award at the assembly today. Below is the citation on her award.
Amelia is a perfect example of a Joondalup Kid. She has impeccable manners at all times and is respectful and considerate. She shows initiative and is an efficient problem solver. She is always willing to help others and does so with kindness and empathy.
Mathematics Award
Congratulations to Grace from Room 20 for being the latest Mathematics Award recipient, great effort. Below is her citation.
Grace displays fantastic mental computation skills during all our Mathematics work. She enjoys all aspects of Mathematics and revels in completing open ended Mathematics tasks. Grace is a star during our mental maths activities filling her superhero hat with goal stickers. Well done for being a stand out Mathematician!

A message from Joondalup Education Support Centre
As you may or may not be aware, the school is still growing at a considerable rate. To keep class sizes at our preferred size the Education Support Centre has purchased two new demountable classrooms.
The first of these are scheduled to arrive next week Wednesday 20 March 2019. There will be some small inconveniences and disruptions during the installation period. We foresee the carpark closest to Kindy classes to be inaccessible during the installation period due to the cranes, temporary fencing and groundworks that will be taking place. A small part of the playground/grass area will also be inaccessible.
As more information comes to hand we will keep the community informed via the school app.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Music and Choir News with Miss O'Connor
Music has been creating some sound these last couple of weeks. In preparation for the Harmony Day sing a long assembly, each class has learnt I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing. We have discussed what it means to live in harmony and what this looks like at Joondalup Schools.
Our pre-primary students have explored fast and slow tempo, using different animals to demonstrate fast and slow music. They had a great time singing A Ram- Sam- Sam and using the actions too.
Our year one students have begun exploring rhythms and used different fruits to compose with.
The year 5 and 6 students have been getting creative as they are studying the ukulele, using different colours and shapes to create their ideal ukulele.
Choir
The Choir has been hard at work preparing for their first big performance of the year, the ANZAC Day Ceremony. Our Thursday sessions have hit the ground running, with the Music room being filled with so many eager Choir students. We appreciate all the hard work our students put into the Choir and I am looking forward to what will be yet again another amazing and respectful performance.
Save the date: ANZAC Day Ceremony
Friday 12th, Week 10.

Garden of Weedin & Garden Club News
The After School Garden Club is in full swing with up to 50 students and their families attending on Wednesday at 3-4pm. We have pulled up spent crops, prepared the soil and planted for our Pizza Garden. At the moment we can take no more students.
Our pumpkins have been harvested and we made pumpkin scones. This was a huge hit with everyone. Who knew pumpkin could taste so good!
Recycling Programs – Near the front office
Please continue to bring in:
- Beauty products and hair care packaging
- Batteries
- Mobile phones and accessories
- Dental hygiene packaging including toothbrushes
- Coffee pods
New Initiative – Ring Pulls – Place these in the tube.
I am pleased to announce that we now have a Grow Free Cart that is set up near the office. The cart has been painted by the staff of Room 21 and Room 21 students will become the custodians of the cart.
"How does the cart work?" We have a simple answer: you give what you can, and take what you need. There are no prices, no bartering, no trading, no value. Like you would to family and loved ones.
Our Schools Cleanup Day was on Thursday 28th February and the campus worked together to make our school litter free so we can all be very proud of it. We picked up 32 bags of litter as opposed to last year’s total of 81. So our school is much cleaner this year. We all celebrated with an icy pole and of course placed our rubbish in the bin.
Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Stacey – Sustainability Coordinators
