Dear families
Year 6 Camp
Welcome back to our Year 6 Campers! They had a wonderful week away where they challenged themselves to scale heights, jump off a platform, ride a bike a long way, walk through dark bush and eat someone else’s cooking. Now it is time to do the washing, have a long shower and catch up on some sleep.
A huge thank you to Miss Skye Mercer, Mr Kyle Easther, Mr Robert Lee, Miss Rhiannon O’Connor, Mrs Amanda Wendt and Mrs Sue Egan for all of their work in organising and attending the camp. They love Camp as much as the students and we want to say thank you for being part of the experience and making it possible for the children.
Back at school some of the Year 6 students enjoyed a range of activities including cooking, extra Science lessons, and excursions. A huge thank you to Ms Sanela Sivic for all of the time and effort given to make this week so special.

Thank you to Mr Lee for all the work he put into the carnival. He has spent plenty of time making sure that things would go to plan.
Thank you to Mr Joe Ferraloro for getting the teams ready each Tuesday and taking the children through their paces.
Thank you to all of the staff for providing advice, being flexible with classes, helping with weekly training sessions, setting up and packing away equipment, and giving lots of encouragement throughout the day. A special thank you to the office staff for their work at the carnival.
Thank you to Mr Jack Tan, our gardener, for marking the oval for the day.
Thank you to Carolyn and the team in the canteen for managing the day’s catering. We enjoyed our lunches and the steady supply of hot drinks.
Thank you to the many relief staff who stepped up on one of our busiest days; their efforts were appreciated.
Thank you to all of the families who were able to come along and support their children and factions.
Finally, and most importantly, thank you to all of the children who participated fairly, cheered loudly, and entered into the excitement of the carnival. We couldn’t have done with it without you!
Here is what two children wrote about the carnival:
Last Friday I had my faction carnival. My class and the school went on our school oval for our faction carnival.
All the year twos and under did their races and the year threes and above did their team games. The year threes did bean bag relay, then passball, leaderball and finally star relay. Then we had recess. After recess we did our running races. I came fifth. After the races we had sausage sizzle lunch.
Everybody watched the tug- o-war after lunch. The year threes had their tug-o-war and gold won. At the end of the day we found out that Green won the carnival and then we went home. I had a fun time at the Faction carnival.
Isaac – Year 3
On Friday the 11th of September it was the faction carnival. The whole school and my class went to the school oval for the day.
The first thing we did was the small kids and year twos did the running races. I was first. Then it was recess. I sat with my best friend in Green. Next we played the team games which were pass ball, star relay, bean bag relay and leader ball. After it was lunch. I had a lunch order which was a hot dog and Juice Bomb. Then I went in the grand relay running race. After we cleaned up the tent and heard who won the carnival.
I felt happy and ecstatic because Green won.
Layla – Year 2

ThinkUKnow
Last week the Year 5 and 6 children participated in a workshop presented by Sergeant Tanya Beverly, from WA Police, about cybersafety. The workshop was called ThinkUKnow. There were a number of key messages for the children including keeping passwords and usernames secure, using the privacy settings on devices, and who to talk to if they feel unsafe.
A parent workshop will be held on 4th November 2020 at 6.30pm and information will be sent home next term. Please note that you will be required to register as place are limited.

Fish
The students in rooms 18, 19 and 20 used warm coloured oil pastels to colour their fish. The colour was then covered with black oil pastel and patterns etched into the black to reveal the bright colours underneath. A blue dye was then painted around the fish.
Sand Dollars
Sand dollars were observed by the students in rooms 4 and 6. The students drew them, creating patterns with radial symmetry. The sand dollars were coloured with oil pastels and watercolour paint or dye as well as glitter paint was painted around them.
Djilba
Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two.
Djilba season is a time to look for the yellow and cream flowers starting en mass.
This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the South West. This starts with the yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. Also colours that are around at this time of year are creams, combined with some vivid and striking blues.
Acacia
The Students in rooms 3 and 6 viewed Acacias and then using cardboard, pom poms and acrylic paint printed these lovely sprays of acacia or wattle.
Bottlebrush
WA has two species of bottlebrush. Both are found in the South West. Using cardboard, skewers and acrylic paint the students in rooms 4 and 7 printed sprays of bottlebrush.
Wildflowers on Mass
The students in rooms 18, 19 and 20 created these lovely wildflowers. They used cardboard to scrape paint down the page, painted stems and then printed the flowers on using a variety objects.
Blooming Wildflowers
These lovely paintings of wildflowers were created by the students in rooms 30 and 31. They used the technique of wet on wet with watercolour paints to lay down the background and then using a variety of objects, including their fingers, printed the flowers on.

Indonesian Language Students’ Work Samples displayed at Joondalup Public Library
Some of Joondalup Primary School's Indonesian Language students’ work samples were on display at Joondalup Public Library from the 14th August to the 24th August. The themes of the displayed work samples are Indonesian clocks, animals, food, sports, flags (Australia, Indonesia, and Aboriginal flags) and leisure activities. Amongst the artworks were Indonesian phrases written by Year 5 students from Room 12.
Our students and language teachers would like to thank Joondalup Public Library especially Judith Jacobs, and Sally Sibley who granted us permission to display the work samples. A big thank you also to Helen, the librarian who helped Ibu Mulyana with the pin boards. The display was part of the Languages Week Celebration across WA schools. Well done students.

As we are coming up to the school holidays, I am preparing myself for all the fun times we will have as a family. With this fun, can come conflicts and disappointment from the children. During these challenging moments, I have found they like to be heard and acknowledged. This can diffuse the situation and they are able to learn how to identify their feelings in order to come to a more peaceful solution. I have included a poster of some of the strategies you could try.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday!
