Staff appreciation
With the Faction Athletics Carnival not too far away, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the staff who are busy getting everything ready. The support they are giving to each other, and particularly Mr Lee, and the increased training for the children is testament to the staff's commitment to ensure that the carnival is a great day for everyone.
Assembly update
Our next assembly is on Friday 28 August 2020 at 8.50am. It will be presented by the Year 6 children and it is going to be groovy. There is a rumour about a very flash costume! As with our last assembly we ask that only one representative from each Year 6 family and one representative from the honour certificate recipient family attend. This is part of the school’s process to monitor the number of people on site as we remain in Phase 4 of the roadmap to recovery for COVID-19.
Faction tokens
We did our first faction token count for Term 3 and the results were fantastic. We have a new leader:

All of the children know that I am Team Green all the way but even I couldn’t contain my excitement for Red. Well done to everyone in Red.
We had so many tokens being used around the school that we have bought even more.
Hats please!
As part of our Code of Conduct we talk about being responsible. This means that all children need to wear the school uniform. Please check that your children have a school hat (i.e. one with a broad brim) in their bag.
Faction Athletics
The children and staff are very busy preparing for the faction athletics carnival. Given the unpredictable weather at this time of the year, everyone is making the most of sunny days. If it’s not raining, someone is training! To help us, please make sure that your children come to school wearing running shoes every day. Children need to be ready to go at a moments' notice.
Funding
Recently funding was announced by the State Government as part of the COVID-19 Roadmap to Recovery program for schools in WA. Joondalup Primary School has received $350,000 for upgrades to the school’s carparks and Joondalup ESC received $300,000 for increased accessibility throughout the school, such as ramps, walkways etc.
Discussions on both of these projects are underway.
Staff meeting
On Thursday the staff are meeting to prepare for the school review. We are looking at the evidence we have to demonstrate that the school is effective and we are doing our best for the children, each other and the school community. We hope to start at 3.15pm so if staff rush from the classes and the gates it is because we have some important things to get in place.
Enrolling at the school
Making a decision about where your children attend school usually means going to the school closest to home. Recently we have had a number of people ask questions about enrolments so I have created a very simple FAQ. It won’t answer every questions but it might be helpful.

The great snail hunt
What is a problem for an avid gardener is not for some of our students! During lunch time some of the children have been exploring the gardens to find snails of all shapes and sizes. It is quite exciting to watch a snail emerge from the shell and slide across the wall. However, a snail pooping on your hand is not so exciting but it is quite funny. The snails are returned to the garden so that they can be rediscovered the next day.
Crash test dummies
Room 14’s Year 1s have been learning about car safety and the importance of seatbelts. They have created cars with all of the safety requirements, including some with air bags, to see if the passengers would survive a car crash. Thankfully no toys were harmed and it has been proven that seatbelts save lives.

The Faction Athletics Carnival is on Friday 11th September 2020. In the coming weeks information will be sent to all families so that you can plan your day.
Under Phase 4 restrictions for COVID-19 we welcome parents to attend events subject to each family social distancing and following hygiene guidelines correctly. Families are able to sit together but must be 1.5 metres from other adults.
We have put some parameters in place to support the wellbeing of children, staff and families. On the day of the carnival the following will happen:
- There will be one large designated viewing areas for families which is the open space by the basketball courts. You will need to access the area by using the gates that come off Jolstra Crescent.
- Families will use the toilets by the staffroom in S and J Blocks. Students will use the toilets in the classroom blocks. For families, if the cubicles are being used, please wait outside until they are free.
- Parents will not be permitted to go to the student bays or the podium area. So that each moment is captured we will have a dedicated person in charge of photos and will send them to parents as soon as practicable after the event.
- There will be a supply of hand sanitiser and soap in toilets which will be topped up throughout the day.
- Please respect the rights of school staff to determine what happens on the school site and follow these expectations politely.
- During recess and lunch families need to remain in their designated area and students will eat in their usual place.
- At the end of the carnival, and if it is prior to 3.00pm, all students will return to their class and parents can sign their own children out by letting the teacher know they are taking the children. You do not need to come to the office and sign them out. You cannot take other children from the class; only take your own.
- The canteen will operate out of the staffroom and on J Block verandah so you will be able to buy coffee, tea, sausage sizzle and cakes. Sausage sizzles will be available for children to pre-order.
With your help we can make this a great event for students, staff and the wider community.
The Indonesian language students’ work samples are on display at Joondalup Public Library from Friday 14th August until 24th August. The display is part of Languages week celebration across WA schools.

Blue Tints Abstract
The students in Rooms 30 and 31 worked with wavy lines to divide their page into shapes. Then working with acrylic paint created lots of tints of blue. Each tint was painted into a shape. When the work was dry the shapes were highlighted with silver paint.
Abstract
Using the self portrait drawing created in Semester 1 the students in Year 6 worked with repetition to create rhythm. Shapes were then filled with pattern or blocks of colour using complimentary colours.

Due to COVID-19, the canteen shifted to a cashless payment system. This has proved to be a much more efficient way of doing things, enabling our team to focus on what we do best - by providing quality & nutritious food to the JPS community.
Cash will still however be accepted in a limited capacity by:
- Pre-ordering meals for recess & lunch at the canteen before 8:50am
- Counter sales of ice creams after the lunch siren goes.
The canteens preferred way of ordering is via online through Quickcliq or with a canteen account.
