Dear Parents
Welcome to a new school year! It is great to be back for 2020 and I am excited about how the year will unfold. It has been a pleasure to hear the stories from the children about what they have done during the summer holidays. There have been plenty of movies watched, family celebrations, holidays and a bit of chilling! The staff have done similar things – family, friends, travel and lots of down time.
It is a pleasure to welcome Mr Peter James to the staff. Mr James previously worked at Karrinyup Primary School. He has already met with his colleagues to plan the year’s teaching program and is looking forward to being part of the team. Mr James was held in high regard by the parents and staff at his previous school and was known for his collaborative work with others, positive relationships with families, and for his commitment to see children reach their potential.
The class structure for 2020 is:
As many of you appreciate Joondalup Primary School is in the unique position where we share the site with Joondalup Education Support Centre. I am actively working towards maximising the relationship between the two schools so that we can share resources and expertise. There is a lot to be learned about how our primary school can support children who have learning difficulties and unique needs. It was good to see the Education Support staff back at school.
I would like to welcome Mrs Anna Eason who has been appointed to the role of Associate Principal in Education Support. Congratulations on being merit selected to this position. We hope that you enjoy being part of this school.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Tan, Mr Townsend, Mr Knobbe, Ms Zulyani, Ms Henderson, and Mrs Pickavance for their work in getting the school ready. Their efforts with cleaning, garden maintenance and general improvements around the site have been appreciated.
New buildings
During the holidays some improvements were made around the school. In the Kindy toilets new floors have been installed and the walls painted, the old storage areas near the early learning area have been removed and will be replaced with one large shed, and J Block has become part of the school administrative area with JESC STEM moving to K Block. This is part of our commitment to provide high quality spaces for learning and work for the children and staff.
The Nature Play space has been added to with walking beams and a fort. A huge thank you to the P&C Association who have funded and organised this for the children. If today is any indication, the equipment will be well-used by everyone.
School Board
The School Board will be meeting on Wednesday 12th February 2020 to discuss the school budget, for me to provide them with feedback about the initial school development days, and to talk about the school’s annual report.
School review
The Department of Education undertakes regular school reviews during which a director from the School Review Directorate and a principal colleague spends a day in the school discussing a range of topics and where we would like to see improvements. The review gives us the opportunity to celebrate our achievements, and for us to seek feedback about our direction. The process for collecting and presenting the information involves all staff, Board members and representatives from the P&C Association. Our review date is Wednesday 27th May 2020.
Voluntary contributions
Thank you to the many families who have paid their voluntary contribution through Ziggies, our preferred book list supplier. If you would like to pay your contribution you can do so by paying cash or using eftpos at the office. If you would like to make a direct deposit into the school bank account the details are:

The rate of voluntary contribution is set by the School Board. The amount is as follows:
- 1 child $60.00
- 2 children $120.00
- 3 children $180.00
- 4 + children $200.00
The cost for two or more children is discounted if paid during Term 1.
This annual contribution is important to the school. Your money is used to purchase library books, Maths resources, reading books and computers and iPads for the classrooms.
Term planner
The term planner is attached for your reference. Please remember that Friday 28th February 2020 is a school development day and all staff will be attending the Joondalup Learning Community conference.
Assembly update
Our first assembly will be held on Friday 21st February 2020 from 8.50am and is being led by the new student councillors.
School Development Days
The two school development days were very productive as we set up our processes for 2020. We spent time collecting information for the school review, talked about the school’s values of ‘Be Respectful’, ‘Be Responsible’ and ‘Be Safe’ and how we recognise the children when these values are being displayed, and staff met in their Phase of Learning Teams or Specialist Area Learning Teams to talk about specific plans for year groups.
I would like to thank Mrs Zyrucha and Mr Easther who provided staff with an update about Mathletics and how we can use it to support our Mathematics program.
Next newsletter
The next newsletter will be sent on Friday 14th February 2020.
Kind regards
Carol Selley
